LWFF - cables lose

by Darren Dunca » Mon, 26 Feb 2001 23:52:54

I had a bit of a disaster last night. Just before I was due to start my
league race as well - the cables inside my LWFF decided to pop off the
spindles inside!! Nothing to get the adrenaline going like a broken wheel
when time is not on your side.

Anyway, I popped off the top to have a look inside and damn, there are
cables everywhere. Tried to work it out myself and had no chance. I did a
quick hunt around for a site and eventually came up with this little gem:

http://www.racesimcentral.net/

Thanks to Jens Schumi!! He has a very thorough walk through in his ball
bearing manual on how to get those babies back on. I consider myself pretty
handy but there is no way I would have worked it out. I had to do it 3 times
to get it right and overall the process took me 4 hours. The wheel is smooth
and works. However, the FF effects seem greatly reduced. Kind of like if you
set the damping too high in GPL. I can feel them but barely.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can fix this? I can't see any
cables crossed over and I was careful not to damage the motor or cables. I'm
wondering if something got shorted. Maybe it's time to tell my GF that I
need a replacement wheel. :-) The problem is I want a LWFF as I have had it
since they first came out and IMO nothing comes close. I use CHPro pedals or
heavily modified LWFF ones with it depending on the sim. Are there any
online stores still selling the original?

This one could then go on my new LAN setup as well.

BTW don't hit the wheel stoppers too hard when turning the wheel - I learnt
the hard way.

Darren

You prob have stretched the springs on the ends of the cables a little
when refitting it 3 times<S> Little ***s aint they!

The tension of the cables wrapped round the motor shaft may not now be
enough for the same forces you had before so they slip a bit giving less
FF feel.

Jens is the Guy to chat with on this, he will be along later no doubt,
but you could try shortening the cables a small amount with a knot where
its not going to matter to increase the tension.

I am working on a new cables kit for the LWFF and if/when I ever get
round to finishing it, I hope to have some sort of minor adjustment on
it for tensioning.

Good luck.

Whooo! Yes I'm interested. Actually your suggestion makes a lot of sense as
I did have to pull those little ***s to get the cables fitted.

Gonna have another look tomorrow, but first I need a couple of hours free,
:-)

I tied a knot on the main one and granted its not quite as smooth as it use
to be but its very nice in the FF and everything else,( been thinking about
putting a knot in the big pulley,  i've also been thinking about getting
jens BB kit
to make it much smooother !!

If tension is too low so that the cable slips through, you can clearly hear
that.
Are all effects low (incl. centering force) or only the FF?
