N4: losing force feedback with LWFF wheel, help!

by James Lars » Thu, 13 Sep 2001 22:13:30

With N4, after 40 laps or so, I lose all my force feedback with my Logictech
Wingman FF wheel.  I pause the race, go to Options, go to controls, turn the FF
off and on, then resume the race.  I may then have FF for a minute or two, but
it goes away.

Does anybody know a fix for this?

Thanks
Sincerely, James

I've seen several posts about this topic, but I don't have a clue about
any fixes.  I would suggest ANYONE who has had this symptom to email
logitech and describe what they have experienced.
As always...updating windows could be a key step to preventing such
action.
Plus...letting us know about your system specs would also be helpful.
(win98?  XP?  2K what directX version etc)

I have the latest Wingman drivers, I'm using Windows ME and directx 8.0a.
Anybody know how to fix this?

Try turning down the strength of the force, I have heard reports where the
wheel loses force feedback once it gets too hot.

Someone said it could be overheating problem. If you have
ff strenght more than 100% it could overheat after some time.

This was the case in mine, had it turned up to high and it was getting hot.
Turned it down to 100 and all is well.

Turn down FF forces. This is a common problem with LWFF. Overheating
causes the motor to shut itself down.

Only fix I know of is opening the LWFF and attach fans.

Thanks for the explanation.  I'll try that.  I had the FF set pretty high.

Funnily it's depending on the wheel.
I have some of those (guess why ;-) and only one tends to switch off during a
hot lapdance at the ring. The others never gave me probs under the same
conditions.
Cannot tell you what series this particular wheel is from, though.
Can you?

Not at home right now. But I have this on two LWFF (classic) wheels.
They are from the second "version" with the stiffer pedal springs.

It happens mostly if you drive on ovals or longer races (50%) on tight
corners. Talking about GPL here.

Cheers,

I might add that the second wheel was bought over a year after the
first one, so the problem probably exists in several batches anyway.

I remember talking to Aidan from Wingmanteam abou this and he said it
was a built-in overheating protection. This isn't included in the
newer GP wheels.

I had this problem too.

I narrowed it down to settings as already mentioned but it was only a
problem on tracks like Watkins Glenn and SearsPoint plus
a couple of smaller speedways.

I think it was probably due to the amount of work the wheel had to do and I
could feel the heat rising on the case when touched.

Not expeienced a problem since turning down the force in the game to 90%.
