GPL - Help!

by John Courtn » Sat, 19 Jun 1999 04:00:00

Hi,
I just reciently reinstalled GPL because the patch should be here
soon so I wanted to use a fresh copy.  My problem now is that after a few
laps GPL just freezes at any track!  I could run 4-5 laps at Monza and
they without reason the screen just freezes, I can still hear the sound
like normal, I can stop the car, but my screen is frozen, I have to
CTRL+ALT+DELETE to return to the desktop and after that the perfromance
of graphics seems slowed, the start menu doesn't just jump up, I restart
my computer and everything is back to normal as far as that goes.  I have
a feeling it is DirectX 6.1 or something, I installed a while ago.  There
deson't seem to be a straight forward way to just uninstall driextx
thought.  Anyway here are some of my system stats:

AMD K6-2 333
128 MB RAM
Diamond Monster Voodoo II (12/16/1998)
Matrox G100
SB 64 sound card

This didn't happen before I reinstalled, has anyone experienced a simular
situation?

Thanks,
John

I'm going to take a stab in the dark here. I think the V2 drivers you have
are glide 2.54. Some people have reported problems with these. I would
suggest getting the 2.53 and placing them in you GPL folder. Should take care
of it. Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Bob

I had a similar problem a while ago. The cause was that I had
overclocked my Voodoo2 slightly too much. Once I slid the bar down a
tad, it worked just fine.

Check in your Voodoo2 tab...

Thanks!  That seems to have done the trick so far!  I am still wondering
why it didn't do it before even thought I had glide 2.54 installed before
I reinstalled GPL!  I am still testing it out a bit more to see if it
happens again though.

Thanks,
John

Hi again!,
Just another quick question!  Is there a site out there I can go to
where I can find a list of different glide library versions to download?
(2.53, 2.51, etc.)  It seems that most of the driver sites just list the
latest driver for your card. (i.e. diamondmm.com).  Is there also a quick
way to tell what the version of a glide2x file is?  With this computer,
this is my first experience using a 3d accelerator! :) (give me time it's
only been 9 months!)

Later,

I had exactly the same problem with my Creative Voodoo2 12Mb.

Fixed:

First I removed the whole card and then reinstalled Creatives own drivers
and now it doesn't freeze,
but I get small graphical errors(specially with mousepointer)

My Quake2 was also doing similar screenfreezes, so I also installed MiniGL
drivers.

I think I will still reinstall Glide 2.53 drivers back, Creatives are
sooooooo slow... :)

It's really frustrating to get screenfreeze in a league race, and specially
when you're leading... :(

You can find all the older Diamond drivers at their FTP site
ftp://ftp.diamondmm.com/pub/display/monster/monster3d2/
I don't know of any other site with the full run down of just the glide
versions.
As for telling which version you have, I would say just check it in the
display control panel, voodoo tab, system info. Or, you can select the file
and check its properties. Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Bob

Go to http://www.3dfx.com and get the Quake III drivers and they should
work well for DirectX 6.1 games, older DirectX games and GPL.

Yep, it worked for me too! I had it 'overclocked only one Mhz but it was too
much. Putting it back at 90MHz (instead of 91) solved the problem for now
(didn't experience a freeze for the last week).
