Need for Speed not calibrating with new T2 pots

I just put replacement potentiometers from Thrustmaster into a GP1 wheel.
Now NFS & Porsche game can't calibrate correctly--the accelerator paddle has
no effect during calibration.  I think the new pots, for whatever reason,
have twice the resistance as the originals, and I think this is throwing off
the game.  Windows 98 has the wheel calibrated correctly, however.

Is there a fix, patch or workaround?
