N3 TCP/IP racing - 'puter car using joiner's pit stall......

by Benjam » Wed, 03 Nov 1999 04:00:00

This may get a little long, and I apologize, but something has got to
give....

When a friend and me try to race NASCAR 3 using TCP/IP, the fastest
qualifying computer car is using the JOINER's pit stall....  every
time - without fail, always the car that qualifies on the pole - even
with only ONE computer car, it's in the clients stall.....

Sierra tech support says "it's your connection" - I don't buy
that..... now if someone can explain to me how a connection problem
could cause this, I could buy it, but to me a connection problem
results in weird, inconsistant, erratic ***or impossible lag - this
is a solid, perfect, mis-position of the pit assignments....

We do typically get a slightly slow connection (.31 just about every
time) but the racing on track and in traffic is solid and bad
connections and clock zaps are VERY rare and I can't see this being
related to latency. With both of us using AT&T, we get a very
reliable, stable connection and no warping or drops, which just makes
the pit problem that much more annoying because the racing is
otherwise ON.....

Before anyone suggests it, running only races short enough to not need
a pit stop is not an option; there has got to be a way to resolve this
and I can't believe that we are the only ones to have the problem...
I'm not trying to be a smartass, but it is aggravating as hell - we
simply cannot race each other seriously.....

My system is a P3 500mhz - 128mb ram - 16mb 3dFX - Windows98 - AT&T
worldnet ISP - U.S. Robotics 56k modem (although I can only get 28.8
connection due I believe to the routing from my home) -- My friends
system is a AMD-K6-2 - 64mb ram - 16mb 3dFX - Windows98 - AT&T
Worldnet - 56k modem (don't know which and he typically connects
around 48k)  - we try it with him hosting since he gets a better
internet connection than me - his IP address with AT&T ALWAYS starts
with 63.14. .... if that means anything to someone (we are literally
grabbing at straws at this point) We have played with the FIFO
buffers, we have turned error correction and data compression off,
turned 'em on, we've connected at slower speeds, we've played with the
car positions in the MULTI.LST to hell and back, we've set the CARS
and PIT #'s in the track .TXT file to 45 instead of 44,  we've tried
different ISP's, we've done every off the wall thing we can think
of.....  nothing even shows a glimmer of working .....

Has anybody had this problem, can anyone suggest something else to
try, can somebody reccomend a good sedative....... etc, etc,

Thanks In Advance for ANY help; I'll stop now.......

*snip*

Have you tried restoring the stock track.txt files from the N3 CD ROM?
Just an idea.

yup, for some reason, every time I get the message "set track txt to match
server"  even though we are using the same so just to eliminate doubt we
each copied the .txt's from the cd and replace the file before
connecting.....

got another thought: the IP address is ALWAYS followed with :17761   I've
never seen an IP with that, what is it and should I leave it off when
joining...  in other words, the host IP will be something like
63.14.132.107:17761

17761 is the port # the connection is using, you should leave that alone.
