GP2: realism without steering help?

by Arto Wik » Wed, 03 Sep 1997 04:00:00

I tried GP2 without the steering help, and keeping the car on the
track - not to mention achieving good lap times - seems to be
very difficult. (I use wheel and pedals.)

How does this compare to the real F1 cars? Is it really that hard,
or even harder? Perhaps the lack of steering wheel's and overall
physical feedback explains also something of the difficulty?
(At least some friend of mine who flies an aeroplane told me
that it is easier to land the real thing than MS's flight simulator
aeroplane! And just because of the lack of physical feedback.)

With the steering response help off, the reaction is far too quick - there
will always be some lag in a "real" system - personally I believe that the
response is more realistic with the help switched on - but then that's just
me!

Yeah, its tough, its hard and it takes LOTS of practice......dump
the steering help, get a good 'CON' file set-up.....the Alexandro
Zarnardi one is good (available download at most good GP2 sites)
First you gotta learn to drive and keep the pig on the track(s), then
the FUN begins.....you can start to RACE. Good luck.

Thanks Richard!

I tried these and the feel was much better! Funny thing is that I first
remembered them wrongly: "reduce with speed" to 100%, and "low sensitivity
zone" to 0%. And the feel was not bad like that, either!

In the recommended way spinning seems to happen easily, but I guess
that is also the case with real F1 cars.

By the way, I had to increase the Max Lock from deafault 12deg to 20deg
to be able to get well thru the Monza corners. What is the realistic
max lock?

Another question: What does the option "Opposite lock help" mean?

[snip]

Dave, do you have any URL's for Alexandro's .con file setup?  I'd
really like to try it, but haven't been able to find his name
anywhere.

TIA,

Dave

Hi Dave, I drive with a Thrustmaster T1 connected to a Gravis gamecard
without any helps or aids at all and my processor occupancy never
exceeds 100%, perhaps you can download car and controller setup from my
page:

http://www.racesimcentral.net/~w-41236/

To get the setup just download my Monza hotlap and view the performance
data, then the setup is found under the "car setup" button in the "drive
options" window.

If you can, lower the occupancy so it never exceeds 100%. If you drive
with the occupancy over 100% you are actually driving in slow motion,
hence your real speed is lower than the speed shown in your***pit. If
you time your 130% hotlaps while viewing them you'll notice that it
takes much longer than the clock shows in GP2.

I've also driven a Formula Ford in reality and that was easier than GP2,
but with opposite lock help on - spins in GP2 is easier to catch than in
a Formula Ford. So loose the opposite lock help, guys :-).
