Sounds like a variation of a simple old IBM tactic of FUD.  Announce
the new product to freeze people from looking at something else and
then, oh by the way, we don't know now when we wil release it.

Technical challanges?

Probably the green kind.  They haven't been doing to well lately...

This gives the GeeForce a head start now.
