I loaded DirectX 8 for N4 and that works fine. When I play GPL the screen
locks up. I can still hear the audio but the video is locked up.

My system:
PIII 600
256 ram
voodoo 3 3000 (latest drivers)
win 98se

Any ideas?

Every time there is an DX update, people have similar problems, whilst
others have
ZERO. I can only say the installing of DX8 was not the cause but rather the
final
straw in a system near collapse.
Try the dx8 compatible drivers from x3dfx or the following site.

myself and others have had problems with screen lock/freezes after loading
dx8. those people and myself have all returned to dx7. the other night i was
speaking to a Dutch guy in VROC and he has loaded dx8 with 6.50 drivers with
success.

I use DX8a, no problems whatsoever..

I had this problem with my V3 running glide with dx8 but it worked ok in
D3D, *** theorists may think Mickeysoft were out to knobble glide.
