O/T..Where can I get USB 2.0 drivers?

by V \ » Fri, 08 Oct 2004 02:04:27

I don't want to get them from SP1 or SP2. I had installed and had trouble
with them. I am happy with how my XP is running as is. I just can't find the
USB 2.0 drivers for it. I've looked through Microsoft's page and serached
for my mobo manufacturer and found none. Can any drivers work or can someone
direct me to a direct download for my XP 2.0 drivers??  Much appreciated.
Sorry for the O/T post, but you guys are going to know if ANYONE will.

Is it a USB 2 addin card or on the mobo?  Either case go to the mfg site and
they should be available for d/l.  If it on the mobo you might also try to
find em on the cd that came with that mobo.

They are integrated. I checked my CD and it only has the link to SP2 for the
drivers. The site didn't help any more. MSI KT4V-L board with the VIA 400a
chipset. Thanks though.

You need to install SP1 (or better yet SP2)  If your system is a bit shaky
then do a backup first - use Nero's HD backup or something.  This is where
partitioning is so useful.  If you've got all of your data, games etc on you
C drive then backing up can be quite a chore.  Failing that, SP1 and SP2
both have options to uninstall.  Make sure you choose the option to backup
existing system files when installing the service packs so that you can roll
back.

There are currently 6 manufacturers of the Hi-Speed USB host silicon
themselves, they are.

ALi (Acer Labs)
Intel
NEC
SiS
VIA
nVidia

Look in your manual for the layout then identify if it has any markings that
match one of the above listed mfg's.  If you can id then go to their site
and see if they have a driver available.

I have an Nforce based board and its my understanding that you need SP1 for
XP to beable to use USB 2.0.  My Nforce drivers will skip USB 2 if SP! is
not installed.

A lot of manufacturers do not provide USB 2.0 drivers any longer and
instead require you to install SP1.

USB 2.0 was a mess on Windows when it came out, and to a certain extent
it still is.

Here's a tip.  This confuses people that first go through it :)

This applies to Intel chipped boards, but most likely AMD as well.

When you first install SP1, the USB 2 ports will still show as disabled,
or have hellow question marks.

AFTER you install SP1, here's what you need to do:

1.  Double-Click on the yellowed item in the device manager.
2.  Go to the Driver Tab.
3.  Click on update driver.
4.  Go through the wizard.  It will find the drivers deposited by SP1
and enable the USB 2.0 controller/port.

You will have to do this more than once for each one in most cases.

For the most part MadDAWG is correct.  Some manufacturers supplied
'wedge' drivers until SP1 came out, but now that it's been out forever
most have dropped them and only support USB 2.0 via SP1 or above.
