GPL and Win2000

I'm having a major problem running GPL on Win2000. I did a search of
deja.com and found a number of messages saying GPL runs perfectly on
Win2000, but it sure doesn't for me. When I start GPL, I get the 3dfx
splash screen, then the Sierra Sports splash screen, then a mess with
the GPL opening screen. Sometimes it's not even recognizable, sometimes
it looks kind of like the opening screen, but it's squished into one
corner, with splotches drawn elsewhere. Nothing works, and I have to
kill the Sierra window in the Task Manager.

Config:
PII 450mhz
384mb RAM
Gigs of free disk space
Voodoo 3000, 16 mb, latest Win2000 drivers, works perfectly with several
flight sims.

Any ideas? Thanks,
John

update your GPL with George Smiley's Glide'o'matic. http://www.gplea.org

Thanks, Mika; I can now get GPL to run.

However, now I have a good-sized, solid-color rectangle at the top
center of the screen (when in the car), and the force-feedback (MS
gameport Force Feedback wheel) is atrocious. No feedback when the wheel
is centered or to the right, but if I move it to the left at all, the
force feedback grabs it and pulls it full left and shakes it as if I
were bumping up against a curb, even if the car is fully stopped.

I can't find any updates on the MS site for the Sidewinder force
feedback wheel. Is there something else I need to do?

Any suggestions about this. I really appreciate your help.
John

Try getting the "patch-o-matic" from GPLEA (www.gplea.org) in the
utilities section.  For me GPL would die right after the title screen.

I am still having stuttering and the occasional crash, but at least it
runs (and at least I have a win98 partition to fall back on :)

Particulars in case anyone has a quick solution:

2 x P3-550mHz
512MB Ram
VooDoo4
Win2k Pro
Latest 3DFX drivers
All the usual GPL patches + the patch-o-matic.
anywhere from 800x600 to 1600x1200.

I installed the "patch-o-matic" and was able to get GPL running, kind
of. The "kind of" is that my Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback wheel
is not exactly usable. Well, okay, not usable at all.

First, I cannot get the profile editor to work, nor the activator. The
editor tells me I need "DEVMGR.DLL, which is not on this system." But it
is on the system, in several places, actually. So, given that I can't
set up the controller, I can't map the paddles to up-shift and
down-shift, nor the buttons to do various things I used to have.

Second, when I drive, there is essentially no force-feedback when the
wheel is centered or right of center. But if I move it the slightest bit
left of center, force-feedback grabs it, pulls it clear over to the left
and tries to hold it there. As you can imagine, this isn't drivable.

Knowledgebase that only the Sidewinder joystick is supported in NT4.0 --
nothing else, and not a word about running any of this stuff under
Win2k.

You can imagine that I'm a little frustrated. I don't really want to buy
a wheel that runs under Win2k, so if anyone has experience with this MS
Sidewinder FF wheel under Win2K, I'd love to hear it.

Did you mean to say "joystick" there?  If so, I just read on one of the
microsoft.public.win2000.* groups that the original Sidewinder software
isn't supported in W2K.

Which devices are affected, I don't know.  Haven't tried my old Sidewinder
joystick yet.

Yeah, I did mean to say "joystick." The MS site says that *only* the
joystick is supported under NT4.0, and not a word about the wheel.
Doesn't sound good to me. Isn't there anyone out there using the MS FF
wheel under Win2K? I hope so...
