Video Card Frustration

by NUKE » Sun, 11 Jan 1998 04:00:00

Is it just me or is anyone else getting tired of all the variables with
video cards? It seems a lot of manufacturers are trying to do their own
thing and in doing so are making the WHOLE system way too complicated. I
can only speak for myself (and a few friends), but don't you think it would
be nicer to buy a good card and be able to use it on all your games and
other applications, without downloading drivers & patches for this and
that? And wouldn't you like to buy a game and use it properly the first day
without searching the net for the latest drivers??

I bought a Creative Labs 3d Blaster a while ago and find there are a lot of
programs that don't fully support it. 3dfx seems to have the upper hand
right now, so I'm going to buy a Canopus Pure 3D add on card. Why don't we
all throw our support behind 3dfx and hopefully the other card makers will
see this is the way to go and start making better (yet COMPATABLE) cards. I
just wanna make clear I am in no way associated with ANY hardware maker,
just growing increasingly frustrated with them all. So make your choice
wisely and buy what you will, but remember WE have the oppurtunity to MAKE
THESE GUYS GIVE US WHAT WE WANT. Vote with your purchase power.

I agree with this entirely, but have you noticed there is one group that
seems to have conquered the problem. Tomb Raider II seems to be able to
use any hardware acceleration that it finds on the system regardless of
the chipset available. I think they have done a fantastic job with
programming to bridge all of the 3D troubles. Why are they the only team
to have created such a magnificent product?

Nuke,    the 3dfx has become the de-facto standard and there are now
many manufacturers pumping out reasonably priced boards with the Voodoo
chipset. One way you could go that would be a pretty safe bet would be
to pick up a new Hercules Thriller 3d card that will do 2D/ D3D and
Rendition acceleration (plus OpenGL drivers soon.) Then just wait a
little bit and slam in one of the new Voodoo II cards alongside. Believe
me, with that setup you would be able to run almost anything with full
detail if you have a reasonably fast computer.

So, we're talking $150 for the Thriller and another $200+ for the
Voodoo?  My money doesnt grow on trees.  Not to mention the use of
ANOTHER slot on my MB.  What I say, is why doesn't someone come out with
an ALL-IN-ONE card?

Im done ranting, thank you for reading.
