Nascar 3 and Celeron problems...

by Jim Teste » Sat, 27 Nov 1999 04:00:00

I know that I've seen some posts regarding problems with N3 running under a
Celeron platform.  But I've not had any problems at all with my AMD so I
didn't really read the solutions.

Now my son buys a Celereron 333 Mhz and a Monster 3D card and trys to run
Nascar 3.  It won't even recognize the Monster 3D.  It loads up in D3D and
then goes about a half a lap and freezes.  (with the sound still playing)

I know the Monster is set up ok because his GPL recognizes it.  We tried to
find some newer drivers for it but the diamondmm site is down.  Would new
drivers even help?

Any solutions on how to get his N3 to recognize his Monster 3D?

Thanks in advance...

No probs here with Celeron and Banshee. You might try new reference
drivers for Monster card at:

I've had no problems whatsoever running N3/NL on the following system:

Celeron 300a overclocked to 450 (4.5 x 100 FSB)
64 MB PC100 RAM
Matrox Millenium G200 8MB
3DFX V1000 Voodoo2 12MB PCI
ASUS P2B motherboard
Windows 98

Both run well (albeit not as graphically pleasing, a cheap GPL-oriented
system) on:

Pentium II 350 overclocked to 466 (3.5 x 133 FSB)
64MB PC100 RAM
Diamond Stealth II S220 <-- Great for GPL and N99, but since N3/NL ditched
rendition... :(
Abit BH6 Motherboard
Windows 98

Nascar 3 and Celeron problems...

I honestly can't see how you could blame the celeron platform.
I own both an AMD and an Intel system, and the least likely culprit is
the celeron.  Firslty, is this video card the original Monster 3D i.e.
3dfx voodoo I?  If it is I belive have not updated the driver for a
while, and the company may have abandoned it at DirectX-5 (last time I
checked 8 months ago), and the glide driver may not have been updated.
Now with Win 98 you may have installed DirectX-7 already.  If you
bought a relatively new system, it should have a video card that
should be better than the original Monster 3D.  What is the main video
card?  I'm running N3 using glide and a voodoo II, but I need to have
powerstrip installed so that I only use the voodoo II for glide, while
my other video card for OpenGL and D3D.
Dd you try running N3 with the native video card in D3D after?
uninstaling the Monster card, installing the latest main video card
drivers, and directx?.  If that works, then try installing the Monster
and its latest drivers (you might want to try 3dfx reference drivers),
and reinstall Direct X and see if the game runs under D3D, then test
it under Glide.

I wasn't "blaming" the celeron. I was simply stating the type of processor.

In any case...it's all fixed.  Due to the advice of the folks on this
newsgroup.  My son and I downloaded the newest reference drivers for the
card...and everything works just fine now.

Thanks again all...
