GPL & GEFORCE FAQ Wanted

by Sinj » Tue, 07 Mar 2000 04:00:00

Does anybody have (or know a link to) a FAQ or printed tips for
getting GPL to work with a GEFORCE card (i.e. CORE.INI settings,
OPENGL settings, etc.)

I've been trying for over 5 weeks to get this combo to work and I am
about ready to give up.  Originally the game would lock the computer
whenever the pit-window appeared on the pre-race screen.  After
fdisking and reinstalling Win98SE, DX70a and GPL (yes GPL and Win98
were the only 2 things on the computer) I was then able to get into
the***pit where the mirrors would flash quickly for about 5 seconds
then the computer would lock (as usual) and I would have to do a
power-reset.

I KNOW people out there are playing GPL with the Annihilator Pro -
please share the hidden secrets of getting it to work.  Meanwhile I
will continue to play Viper, SCGT, Nascar 3 and every OTHER driving
game out there except GPL.

Thanks.

Make sure you are running the NVIDA reference driver, V3.68 or better.
You must have version 1.2 of GPL installed as well as the OpenGL patch.
The default OpenGL settings in the core.ini file are fine to start with.
What fixed a lot of problems for me was getting the latest drivers for the
motherboard chipset.
I have a VIA Apollo chipset and was plagued with problems until I got their
latest AGP and bus drivers.
I would also go to http://www.racesimcentral.net/
They show you how to get the best out of your GeForce card.  Follow their
instructions, but make sure you set "Use Block Transfer" in the OpenGL
settings.  This gets rid of the flickering mirrors.

GPL & GEFORCE FAQ Wanted

Just wanted to answer my own request for those of you with the
Annihlator Pro card who wants to run GPL.  After 3 hours of
experimentation here is what works:

DISABLE AGP support through the Blaster Control Panel
Go to the PERFORMANCE tab and slide the slider 2 notches to the left.

Modify CORE.INI and set the 2nd OpenGL line to 3 (Bilinear with
Mipmapping) and Mirros to 2.  Setting 4 (Trilinear still crashed)

GPL WORKS GREAT!   1280x1024 at 32fps & 1600x1200 at 27fps

Just make sure to re-enable AGP support and slide the performance bar
back to the right for all other games or your performance will suck.

What resolution do you have to use to get a rock solid 36 fps ? And I mean
no slowdown on online play with all four visible cars around you.

Depends on track - I can race most of the tracks at 1280x1024 and
always get 32-36.

If I drop to 1024x768 I get a fixed 36fps (which I am sure would be
higher if it could go higher) but I will sacrifice 4fps for the extra
high resolution.

These framesrates are with a full 19 car lineup in solo play.  I've
only tested with 2 cars online and it remained rocksteady and I only
have a crappy 31kbs connection.
