NFS:Underground and Porsche Unleashed

I was a big fan of Porsche Unleashed, but chose to skip over NFS:U
since I'm not into the 4 banger imports and the whole scene in
general. One of my buddies got it, and was badgering me to get it to
play online. I blew him off a few times, then finally picked it up.
I'm glad I did. It's not quite as good as Porsche Unleashed, but the
Tournaments and Sprint races (cross town races through traffic)
definitely feel very much like NFS:PU.
The interface shows its console roots, online being particularly
klunky, but once you get into the game, it's all forgotten.

I'd recommend checking this one out for anyone that loves Porsche
Unleashed. Undergound feels kind of like a spiritual successor.

I was a big fan of all the previous NFS games, and I was a
little skeptical of a ricer version, but I love it too.  It's a lot of fun.

Thanks for the short but informative insight on that game Tim.
Porsche 2000 has always been my favorite NFS game.
It's always good to hear end users' critical review of newer releases....and
no, they're not always better.
But having read this, I think i'll check it out. :)

Not in the true sense.. closest thing would be the bumper cam

It is in no way a realstic game though as far as physics go.  I am not sure
how one could say "I'd recommend checking this one out for anyone that loves
Porsche Unleashed. Undergound feels kind of like a spiritual successor."

It can be fun, but it is a pure arcade game

I totally agree, I wouldn't put it close to NFS:PU myself, that one was
a nice "sim light", this one is pure arcade without any realism
whatsoever, nothing wrong about that in itself though, just not my kind
of thing and I enjoyed NFS:PU

Of course, the whole 2fast 2furious theme doesn't do anything for me in
the first place, every time I see a car with fancy "graphics" I feel
like asking the owner who it was that "tagged" his car, so I'm prolly
not the right person to ask if you're into that and looking for a game
:-D

What we need is "NFS: Holden vs Ford" :-D

I rented it on Xbox, it seems to mimic the ricer scene pretty well.
You gain more street cred by sticking stickers on your car, pointless
wings and all the lovely things that ricers do than you do on actual
performance upgrades!

It's probably better online than it is single player, the AI concentrate
more on taking you out than actually racing you and there does seem
to be a similar *** band effect that the Gran Tourismo series
implement.

I'll side with Goy, give me a NFS: Holden vs Ford in a similar game
and I'd be alot happier. ;)

Cheers,
Rod.

I guess this is where the subjective interpretations of what makes a
sim come in. Porsche Unleased's***pit view sure doesn't make it what
I'd consider a sim. You could run a whole campaign careening off
scenery and other cars with little consequence, except for the one
mission where you had to deliver the car to the dock without damaging
it. I wound up playing Unleashed from the bumper cam because it gave
the greatest sense of speed and the best view. I definitely consider
it a pure arcade game, just like Underground. Both are very fun and
look great, which is exactly what I want from an arcade racer.

I found the four car sprint and circuit race tournaments very similar
to Porsche Unleashed. The physics are very lax with slight basis in
the real world, just like in NFS:PU. The car will slide, oversteer
(there is even a type of race called "Drifting" that requires the use
of throttle-on oversteer to win), leave the ground and even flip.
You also go through the process of upgrading your car in the exact
same way -win races for cash, then buy better exhausts, brakes,
turbo's and factory lightening kits. Underground adds a drag racing
element which is pretty well done, IMO, since it places the emphasis
on perfect launches and shifts.

Please remember that I also blew this game off as junk until I gave it
a chance. I still like the cars in Porsche Unleashed much better,
although Underground does have some cool ones like the last generation
RX-7 and Nissan Skyline GTR.
Until Hell freezes over and we get NFS:Ferrari Unleashed, I still say
this is about as close as you're going to get to PU.

I personally do not find the Physics in Underground to be anywhere near PU

Maybe its just me
