I guess this is where the subjective interpretations of what makes a
sim come in. Porsche Unleased's***pit view sure doesn't make it what
I'd consider a sim. You could run a whole campaign careening off
scenery and other cars with little consequence, except for the one
mission where you had to deliver the car to the dock without damaging
it. I wound up playing Unleashed from the bumper cam because it gave
the greatest sense of speed and the best view. I definitely consider
it a pure arcade game, just like Underground. Both are very fun and
look great, which is exactly what I want from an arcade racer.
I found the four car sprint and circuit race tournaments very similar
to Porsche Unleashed. The physics are very lax with slight basis in
the real world, just like in NFS:PU. The car will slide, oversteer
(there is even a type of race called "Drifting" that requires the use
of throttle-on oversteer to win), leave the ground and even flip.
You also go through the process of upgrading your car in the exact
same way -win races for cash, then buy better exhausts, brakes,
turbo's and factory lightening kits. Underground adds a drag racing
element which is pretty well done, IMO, since it places the emphasis
on perfect launches and shifts.
Please remember that I also blew this game off as junk until I gave it
a chance. I still like the cars in Porsche Unleashed much better,
although Underground does have some cool ones like the last generation
RX-7 and Nissan Skyline GTR.
Until Hell freezes over and we get NFS:Ferrari Unleashed, I still say
this is about as close as you're going to get to PU.
