local call across town, 14400 baud, .11 latency, smooth graphics,
about 40-50 laps into the race both times. 19 cars, SVGA mode,
much detail on.

I had a portion of the top of the screen go black and the words
"DOS-4GW error " then bunches of numbers and stuff. the system
locked up.

does this indicate any particular type of problem?
computer memory, data transmission, etc?

That is a general 4GW crash, usually indicative of a memory or hardware
conflict.  Are you both using the boot disk or booting clean?
Sometimes EMM386 can cause this sort of thing.
