NASCAR keeps crashing! HELP!

by Tim Brenn » Wed, 12 Apr 1995 04:00:00

I just recently purchases a new computer and NASCAR racing. I got the
computer from Royal, it is a 100MHZ Pentium EISA/PCI motherboard (TYN
MERCURY I believe) with 8 MB DRAM and a Diamond Strealth 64 Video PCI
card. The system seems great and I don't seem to have many problems with other
games like INDYCAR Racing.

NASCAR racing however will only work for so long before
it crashes. Sometimes I can make it through one race but ususally before the end
of the second and often in the first it crashes. The crash is one of two types.
1) The screen will freeze but the sounds will continue as If I was still racing
and their is nothing more I can do except reboot.
2) DOS4GW crashes with an error message (invalid opcode) and the game dumps me out
to the dos prompt.
Sometimes the crashes seem to corrupt files on my hard drive.

I have installed the NASCAR v1.2 patch and booted with the minimum set of device
drivers loaded (tried both low and high). The only drivers loaded are the Sound
Blaster 16 drivers and sometimes I load the CD drivers (MSCDEX and SANYO).

Anyone with any clue what my problem is? Do I have a bad NASCAR disk?
ANY help GREATLY appreciated.

I had similar problems with NASCAR and it turned out the fault was the
configuration of my sound card.  I use a Media Vision Pro Audio 16 and
for some reason it crashed the game with the image on the screen and no
sound.  The tech people at Papyrus tried several solutions and finally
helped me isolate the problem.  Media Vision tech gave me some new
parameters for my config.sys file to drive the card.  If I am not
mistaken, the "screen image frozen and sound on" crash is well known to
the Papyrun techies.  If your sound card is not the problem, call them
at 617-868-3103.  They recented extended their support hours.   Bill

Yeah, does anyone know what the problem here may be?  My Bro-in-law has
the same problem on his Intel DX2/66...also, we've noticed the graphics
for Nascar will sometimes start developing black lines that will
stretch from the cars or go from car to car.  This problem is not
consistant, but it is a pain.  I just dl'd the patch and will try it
this eve.

BTW, even though he has a VESA bus, he's using a EISA Diamond Stealth
brand card...is this a setup/compatibility issue w/ the card & monitor?

Thanks in advance.

Tim

I'm not crashing the game, but I am having trouble getting it to
recognize my MV PAS 16. Care to show me the config.sys line for the
the driver that works for you? Right now it only takes the cruddy SB
8 emulator from the PAS.

Here is the line from my config.sys file.  I use the 8-bit PAS stereo
option in NASCAR:

device=c:\fusion\mvsound.sys d:6 q:11 j:1 t:1 s:0,220h,1,5 x
