Nascar keeps crashing

I recently bought Nascar, I have been driving Indycar for a long time and I
have never had any problems with the game(I am running a 486/66 with 8 meg).
I bought nascar and i am having alot of trouble with the game locking up.
I went to the papyrus ftp and got the v1.2 upgrade and installed it.
I also made a boot disk (just in case its the lack of memory).
It seems that when i turn off the sound card (I am using a soundblaster pro)
The game does not lock up.
I know that I dont have any irq conflicts
but there is one thing that is really strange, I have the same problem with
Doom and Doom2, and when I turn off the external cache (using the Bios set-up
utility ) I dont have any problems with it locking up but I lose over 50% in
speed on my CPU (using benchmark utilities)
The routine of the crash is usually first the sound of the engine gets stuck
and just keeps repeating itself like a bad cd does and then the video freaks
out and i get a whole screen of error messages something to do with
error 000-fff granular size blah blah blah.

Any ideas what i could do?
I guess I could run it with no sound but I dont think i would have much fun
without the roar of the engine and the grinding of sheet metal
Please anybody with some suggestions, it would be appreciated.

I

Unfortunately I can't help you, I'm having a slightly different
problem. I'm working on setting up Sears Point. I go into the garage to
load my setup, test, go into the garage to make changes, and the game
locks up when I try to leave the garage (Every time!). I reboot, go to
the garage and make the changes I wanted, test, go to the garage to
make more changes, lock up when I try to leave! Just curious if anybody
else has experienced this. So far it seems Sears Point is the only
track doing this.
Apparently Papyrus is working on a new patch (currently called 1.2.1).
They sent it to my boss to try to fix a problem he is having. He cant
change his com port in the game. At any rate I suspect it's in the
early stages because the disk he got was unlabled, just a black disk in
a mailer. unfortunately it didn't fix his problem (or mine).

FYI,
Chris

I have had this occur at Dover, C***te, and Sears Point.  When I go
into the garage to make an adjustment and then try and go back to the
track, the game halts, many lines of code appear on my screen, and the
system prompt appears.  My computer isn't locked up, but the game is
no longer running. It doesn't happen every time; it usually only
happens when I think I've figured out a faster way around the track :)!
I can type in "nascar" at the prompt and the game starts right up
again, with my latest adjustments lost.

I can make a couple of suggestions you can try.

1. If you have the CD-ROM version go back and do a Hard Disk Installation
if you have not already done so.

2. Make a boot disk using the setup program in the NASCAR directory.

The type of crash you describe is usually cause by a lack of memory.

Hi,

Give me your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT configuration, maybe I can
help.

Another possible help...

I too had lockups with NASCAR Racing (V1.0, 1.1, and 1.2).  These were
pretty much random -- sometimes I was kicked out to DOS with the usual
lines of error codes, sometimes my video would freeze and the car sounds
would continue.  I talked with Papyrus MANY times and we never figured it
out.  After 5 crashes in a 3-hour modem racing session I figured it out
and it was MY FAULT.  When I got my T1 I also got the Thrustmaster
Gamecard (a waste of $$).  My T1 and joysticks were plugged into the
gamecard via a Joyswitch (nice thing to have).  I also have a Soundblaster
16.  I never disabled the joystick port on the SB-16 and had the gamecard
and the SB-16 fighting for one joystick port (or NASCAR trying to read
them both?).  I took out the gamecard, plugged the T1/Joyswitch into the
SB-16, and I am crash free for about 2 months (was crashing almost every
time I played).   Hope this helps...

Have your tried adjusting your BUS settings ie. CLK/4 it could be that
the SB is having trouble with the current bus speed.

You may also want to adjust your cache settings 3-2-2-2
and perhaps even a 1 W/S for your write cache.

Adjusting these should only show a minimal difference in speed.

Also did it still lock up using the -f option...

It sounds like I had a similar problem you had.  My real problem ended up
being my Video Card.  I had a REVEL 24 bit card, which I ended up
upgrading to a Stelth 64.  I also barrowed another standard SVGA card and
my crashing problem ceased to exist.
