??? regarding pots in my wheel

by David Ciemn » Mon, 27 Jan 2003 03:19:18

Hi all...I use a TSW. In all Papy games (GPL and all Nascar including 2003
demo) I notice the following.

In a split axis set up when I am in the pits (wheel is turned on) and hit
the throttle while in neutral my wheel turns hard to the left. My hands are
off the actual wheel itself. The wheel should not move at all  IMO.I thinks
this affects my driving a bit especially coming out of turns. Is this
normal?

Maybe some new pots would stop this?

I don't understand how that can happen at all with a TSW wheel.  AFAIK, TSW
doesn't make FF wheels, so how could the wheel move at all without input from
you?

That said, my MOMO Racing wheel which is FF, also exhibits this behavior
depending on its settings....

I don't see it as a problem.

This has nothing to do with FF. When I press down on the throttle  the wheel
(in the***pit) moves.

It does it, I think probably due to the rotational force of the engine on
the car while it's sitting still.  Nothing to do with the pots.
Try setting a keyboard key as your throttle and it will do the same thing.

Aaah......  I thought you meant that your actual wheel turned, not the one on
screen.   As Emily Litella used to say (for those that remember the first years
of SNL) -- "Never mind...."

It's normal that it would effect your driving times, but not normal for it
to happen.
It's been a while since I've raced in the F1 class, but I don't think the
torque difference between that and FV would cause it, and I don't remember
it happening when I did race F1 and it certainly doesn't in NR. So, try
setting the cars to F3 and see if it still happens. My guess is that it
probably will and it's an interaction between pots in the controller itself
(noisy pots cause interference) or the game port. You probably see it to
some extent when you calibrate your wheel in GPL - pumping the gas or brake
may also make the wheel calibration change slightly.
Here's what I would try.
1st, calibrate the wheel in GPL again. Calibrate the pedals first, then the
wheel. It's a long  shot, but it may help.

[If your wheel is new or has been doing this since it was new, you need to
try a different game controller]

If that didn't work, check to see if hitting the brake while in the pits has
a similar or opposite effect. If it doesn't, fine. If it does, keep in mind
for later.
Now we want to determine if the problem is a pot or the game port. I don't
recall if  TSW wheels have USB now or not, but I'm assuming they still
don't. If you have a USB adaptor, try it and see if the problem persists. If
you don't have one, try a different game controller (or sound card with game
controller). It may seem hard to believe, but I've had wheels that worked on
an Aureal Monster card that wouldn't work on an SBLive. If you don't have
another port to try you'll have to skip this, but it could be that the wheel
doesn't work well with the TSW in your computer (it may work fine in someone
else's). So, if the next step doesn't work, your problem is here and you'll
have to come back and address it.

If hitting the brake in the pits had the same or opposite effect as hitting
the gas, get a new steering pot. If not, take your pedals apart and switch
the gas and brake pots. Depending on how they're wired, it could solve the
problem. If not, order a new gas pot.
If your wheel is over a year old and you use it every few days, order all
new pots anyway.

I hope this helps. Good luck.

I really don't know. Probably the old LWFF. There are a lot of good ones,
but the only one with parts after warranty now seems to be the Act Labs
Force RS.
