Hardware recommendations? (race simulator)

by Greg Bero » Sat, 24 Feb 1996 04:00:00

I'm setting up a racing simulator for a friend who will be driving in the
TransAm race at Long Beach.  Right now, we're going with the following
hardware:

Pentium 133 w/ 16Mb RAM
20" monitor
Stealth 64 w/ 2Mb VRAM
AWE32 w/4x CD-ROM
T1 controller

Can anyone recommend anything else we should do?  We'll be using
IndyCarII, but also NASCAR w/ the track conversion program in search of
something close to a TransAm car's performance. (Is anybody interested in
assisting with a TransAm carset?)

If anyone's interested in cheering for us, Mike will be in the #55 red,
white & blue Mustang with the Red Line Oil decals (unless we get some
serious sponsorship :)

Note to Papyrus, if anyone's monitoring:  We used the old IndyCar game to
help Mike learn Mid Ohio for the SCCA national chamionships.  The
results?

                             1994 (first time at Mid O)   1995
GT-1 (TransAm type cars)     qual-3rd, finished-4th       q.-2nd, f.-1st!
GT-3                         q. 1st!  f.-dnf              q.-3rd  f.-2nd

Thanks,
Greg

Given the 20" monitor alone is probably going to cost as much as the
rest of the kit, aren't you skimping a bit on the TM T1 controller?
There's the T2, TSW, and ECC CDS, plus a "Procontroller" that I know
nothing about.

As far as I understand, some 3D games [ arcade games ]
needs 32 MB RAM. Why not considering a P166?

xx20" monitor
xxStealth 64 w/ 2Mb VRAM

Why not Edge 3D 2 or 4 MB VRAM, since your are using 20 inch
monitor, I would suggest 4 MB of VRAM for clearer detail.

xxAWE32 w/4x CD-ROM
xxT1 controller
