Overclocking question?

by John McClare » Sun, 20 Dec 1998 04:00:00

I have a Celeron 266 overclocked to 400. I am running an ABIT BX6
motherboard, 64 megs of PC100 ram, UDMA harddrive, and 2 voodoo 2's. My
system does not seem to be able to run GPL at the framerate others say they
do. At 800X600 at the south africa track my framerate is 18 at start and
only sometimes reaches 36 but mostly around 28 to 30. I am only running with
14 other AI and have just track and cars in mirrors. The detail slider is in
the middle and number of sounds is 4. All other graphics are on. My question
is how are you other celeron overclocking duds and dudets getting solid 36
FPS?  Any special SET commands for voodoo 2's?  I have the latest drivers
for voodoos from diamonds site.

Just asking

I would say the most likely reason is that the Celeron 266 has no L2 cache.
Since you already have a good MB, your best bet would be to pick up a 300A
Celeron.  They can be had for around $100 these days.

If you have the Celeron 266 that means you have no L2 cache.  I'm no expert, but
that might be enough to give the performance hit.  Celeron 300As have 128kb of
integrated L2 cache.

Replace the 266 with a 300A. The 266 has no cache.

hmmm, running a 300a in a bx6 mobo at 374 with a thriller 8 meg video at 800-600
and with a full field of ai and  graphics set as yours I get 25 on the grid and
36 from the first turn on.  from what I've read at 400 your voodoo's should be
faster. dx6 btw.
perhaps you should post this at the apex

Are those Retail box or OEM CPU's? I recently bought a 300A (retail box with
fan included) for $118.

My best guess is that they say GPL hits on the L2 cache pretty
hard, and your C266 doesn't have any. :(  A lot of the Celeron folks
are using the C300A now, which has 128K of L2 cache that runs at full
processor speed.

There are some Voodoo tweaks, I'll let the Voodoo gurus respond to
that (I'm a Rendition kinda guy).

a motor car and racing would not exist as a sport." -- Jim Clark

300A, ABit BH6 here.
Have you tried turning off any grapics options? I generally run with
spectacular highlights and bevelled tyres OFF, especially for on line
racing. You should see a significant increase in framerate for minimal
loss, tha is if you can't afford a new chip like everyone else wants
you to get!!
