GPL: reworked sounds!!!

by MeatWate » Sat, 31 Oct 1998 04:00:00

Hi all,

I have tampered around with some nice sound-engeneering software and altered
some sounds for GPL, making the game (as I see it) even more realistic.

http://www.racesimcentral.net/***er/nixfx.zip 428KB

Louder Audience
Softer and different gear shift
More realistic skid sound
More realistic wind sound
...and a special add-on to the standard >hard_hit< sound...

Download the file
Unpack the sound.dat in your gpl\sound directory
Unpack the downloaded file into the above directory overwriting the old
files
Pack the sound.pck file
Get on the track and enjoy!

Thanks, I like the sounds - particularly the new skidding.  The old one
was too high pitched and irritating.  Yours is a lot better for my taste
althogh I had to bump the volume up a bit to be able to hear lockups
over my Ferrari engine when downshifting :).

Cheers,
Vitzthum.

GPL: reworked sounds!!!

Hi all,

first I'd like to asure all of you that this time it REALLY IS the final
version! At least for some time. I didn't mean to put so much time into this
project, but after the massive positive feedback I got from the very first
version I thought it would make sense to make it perfect.

Believe me, this is the best I could do. The sounds that come with the game
are not that much a playground for engeneering, so it is pretty limited what
can be done no matter how good your equipment is. But I'm sure you're gonna
like this!!!

The engine sounds are the hardest. They have some severe frequencies that
simply won't let you aply some of the many filters I could chose from, as by
adding x on one side, I got losses on the other, but in the end I managed to
get rid of the cheesy and add some bad evil things that will keep the
engine's character but add a whole lot of soul.

On the other hand, it could be that you don't like the new engine sounds at
all. Still a question of taste.

It would be a nice move to drop me a line or two with a short comment. The
only way I can improve my work is to gain as much feedback as positive.

Thank you for your interest,

Mea***er

No. These are simply more realistic sounds that replace the standard sounds.
The scratchiness won't go away, but it'll sound much better ;))

LOL.  All new, better-sounding scratchiness.  You'll marvel at the CD
quality clarity of our scratchy sounds... :)

Isn't there a basic incompatibility between GPL and the Monster sound card?
I kinda remeber a post about that not long ago...

Nope - I have no scratchy - popping sounds on my Diamond Monster M80.

Some else said you can get this when the volume is too high. I have seen
this. I run my sound into a mixer (I have a synthesiser etc on it) and
you can get clipping which gives a 'scratchy' type sound. The mixer
shows it is clipping (a red light flashes) so turning down the sound on
the PC fixes it. Of course my scratchy and your scratchy may be
different!
