Interview with Alison Hine

by Mikkel Gram-Hanse » Sat, 16 Mar 2002 00:11:31

We finally managed to finish the huge interview with the first lady of
Simracing; Alison Hine.
25 pages in word have been moulded into this article, so there ought to be
info and news enough to surprise even the oldest GPL hands here in RAS.
hehe... Who knew that GPL had no internet multiplayer capabilities, before
Alison pointed that out to Papy in the betatest phase ?

It's frontpage news at http://www.racesimcentral.net/  Enjoy.

<snip>

Fantastic stuff. Thank you, thank you, thank you. (Please pass on
thanks to whoever you think should get them... ;-) )

<snip>

Someone get Geoff Crammond to read this bit...

Interesting to see that GPL nearly didn't allow Shift-R in Intermediate
mode - that would *really* have affected VROC Monza races! - and that
Alison & co. very very nearly got an AI slider built in, but were
stopped by "one guy with veto power". I'd like to meet that man in a
dark alleyway ;-)

"I don't see a future in pro sim racing at all," says Alison. That'll
set the cat among the pigeons, I expect. On the other hand, she's
"heard from a reliable source that almost all the top young Formula
Atlantic and CART drivers use GPL to keep their reflexes sharp". That's
a hell of a tribute to the game, really.

And as for WSC...!

Maybe people would be more carefull? I'm in a no-shift-r league, and
you automatically become even more carefull if you know you can't
shift-r..

I thought this would be Kaemmer?

I think she is very right, hence I allways wondered what the hell
FILSCA was talking about.. sim racing will never get a big audience to
attract sponsors.

Yup.. I don't expect WSC will ever be released (the age where 2 people
can program a game is history) and I feel really sorry for Chris and
Tony. I hope they can prove me wrong one day.

Excuse me, the post said '2 people can program a game'

I assume you do not see X-plane as being as complex as a racing sim, why is
that?

So I take it Mr Pabst you dont want anything to do with WSC in the future.

Point taken :)
I didn't knew X-Plane was made by 2 programmers (in fact I don't know
anything about X-Plane :)
But look at how long WSC is in development now.. Chris and Tony should
have done the physics part, empire should have put a whole team of
people on the music, graphics and that kind of time-consuming stuff.
The time WSC is in the making (and the date of the first promised
demo) is getting rather ridiculous.
