how it treats the 3DFX and the Rendition chips?

Go to Papy's website and download the beta OpenGL rasterizer. It
will allow you to use the V770 in GPL. You'll have to add a couple
of lines to your core.ini, but Papy provides those with the
download.
There are mixed results. Some poeple are having good luck and some
aren't. Something you have to put up with to get a decent frame
rate is a reduction in how often your mirrors are updated. This
is adjusted from the core.ini settings provided from Papy.
Personally, I hated the way the mirrors looked when I set the
graphics up to get a good frame rate. They were nearly useless,
which is bad since I use them a lot. Also, subjectively, I didn't
like the way the graphics looked as opposed to my previous Hercules
Thriller 3D. I never managed to equal it's frame rate, either.
Add all those together with the fact that GPL is nearly the only
thing I play (Viper, GP2 and the origional NFS occaionally) and
I took the V770 back and traded it in on a VooDoo3-3000. That
allowed me to bump up my 36fps resolution two notches up from where
I was able to race previously. Graphics aren't as pretty,
but they're not too far off the Hercules, and that's a rather
subjective thing anyway, so others might have the opposite feeling.
In the end, it's up to what you're happy with and what else you
play. The VooDoo3 may be a technically inferior card, but the TNT
card just didn't fit my needs, which makes it FUNCTIONALLY inferior
to me.

Most likely this is a case of not having enough horsepower in the CPU.
Also, the mipmapped graphics through OpenGL (which isn't the TNT2, TNT, etc
card's fault) is very bandy and you'll likely get best results from setting
the mipmapping to 2 (i.e. bilinear filtering without mipmapping). How to
change this is explained in the readme included with the OpenGL beta2
rasterizer thats downloadedable from Papyrus.
Personally I hate the mirrors in GPL any which way they are served up.
That may be true, but outside the question since it sounds like he already
has a TNT2 and just wanted to know how to use it with GPL.

Very true. Unfortunately, I wasn't aware of these mip options until
I had made my exchange.
I did rather ramble on there, didn't I? Next time I do that
just reach right through the computer screen and slap me and I'll
be quiet. :)
