Viper 770 - Compatible with 3dfx

by Tim Deatherag » Mon, 12 Apr 1999 04:00:00

I am in the process of getting a new computer that has a Diamond Viper card
that is supposedly compatible with 3dfx according to my vendor/client.

I've been told it is probably the Viper 770. Does anyone have any experience
with this card and N2/Ten/NROS????

NO NO NO it is NOT 3dfx compatible.  Where these people get this stuff I
have no idea.

Viper V770 will be TNT2 - it'll do Direct3D, and OpenGL.  But not Glide
(3dfx).  Will do not one thing for N2 or NR99, which use Glide and RRedline
(Rendition) for 3D support.  It will sort-of run GPL, with a beta Open GL
patch (may work better if the driver is better than for the TNT).  With N3
being based on GPL, this may or may not be an issue down the road.

But not the card to get for 3D in N2/NR99.

Viper 770 - Compatible with 3dfx

first of all..

a tnt2 is not 3dfx compatible..

the TNT2 supports , DirectX, Opengl
the Voodoo (series of chips, including voodoo3) support DirectX, Opengl, and
Glide

so the TNT2 is compatible with 3dfx.. in directx and opengl, but NOT Glide

hope that answers your question

No no no...whomever told you that has to stop smoking grass.

All 3dfx cards use Glide. GLide is property of 3dfx.  Supports Glide,
Opengl, and Direct3d

TNT- Nvidia, supports Direct3d and Opengl , but NOT glide.

Your wrong. How can a card support 3dfx? 3dfx is the company. Jesus,
some people are so "out" there.

Direct3d = TNT, 3dfx cards, basically anything out there

OPENGL- TNT, 3dfx and a few others

GLIDE- 3dfx cards only

Viper 770 - Compatible with 3dfx

Well, the 770 isn't out yet, and it is definitely not compatible with the
Glide API(3DFX). If you want Glide, you need to add a Voodoo accelerator to
your system. The Voodoo-3 combo 2d/3d cards are out, at least the STB 3000
AGP is, and they do support Glide. I think Best Buy has them for about
150.00 US right now. Most of the reviews of the card are pretty good, but
not as good as the 770 (TNT2). Good luck.
