NR2002 Won't Install?

by Andy » Tue, 09 Apr 2002 06:56:42

Hey all,
Got NR 2002 as a birthday present, and I can't get it to install.
I'm runnig WinXP w/ a P3 1gig 512 ram, SB Live, and
a V5.
It goes through the process fine, get the wav file test, copies the
files, get a message that is had detected the correct version of DX,
and at the very end I get a little box that says.
AddFolderIcon failed.  (the box title is "Severe")
My only option is to click ok.  When I check the HD, no directory was
created, no files copied.  (although when it says it is copying files
my HD lite is on.)
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Andy

Not sure but maybe you are not logged on with admin rights to install a program
on XP???

I had to reinstall NR2002 this morning (couldn't save any changes to options
settings or setups) and had exactly the same error as you.  All I did was to
run the install program again and the installation was completed normally.

Maybe you should try posting your problem on the Sierra Boards.

Good luck,
Joe

Thanks for the info Joe, interesting you had the same problem.  I've
tried installing it at least 8 times, and always the same.  I can't
tab out of the install just before the error comes up to see if the
files are on the HD.  I get the AT&T thing, tell it ok, (tried telling
it not to add them as well) then there is a pause and I get the error.
I'm just curious if the files are ever copied.
Anyway, going to check out and post on the Sierra Boards.
Thanks again,
Andy

It almost sounds like the copy protection on the disc(notice I did NOT say
CD) may be overwhelming the read capability of your drive.

Dave,
I'm not sure I follow, but I also though it seemed like a copy
protection problem as well.  I do have a cd burner, and I also tried
installing it from that drive, with the same results.  (I've never had
a problem installing a game from my normal cd rom though)
The fact that all the files are deleted is what makes me think it is
copy protection problem.  I think it came from EB, since it was a gift
I don't have the slip, but I am going to try swaping it for a new cd
tomorrow.
Thanks,
Andy

Some cdrom drives(burners, etc..)or drive controllers have trouble with the SecureROM (sic?) copy
protection scheme used on the newer papy titles.  If you happen to own one of the problematic drives
or controllers, swapping out the disk will not fix anything.  This was a big issue last year when N4
came out and most people seem to have gotten it worked out one way or another.

Ahhh, I see, now that makes more sense.  That's why Dave made a note
about it not being with the cd.  You would think more people would of
reported a problem though?  I checked google, and the Sierra boards,
(even posted) as of yet no replies.  Well I have an older CD drive I
pulled, cause it was to noisy,  I'll drop it in and see if it the game
will install.
Thanks for the info!

It doesn't sound like it's a copy protection problem since you mentioned
the specific error: "AddFolderIcon failed".  This error would result if
for some reason InstallShield was unable to add an icon to the start
menu and/or desktop (the exact timing of the message box could help
narrow down the culprit).  This is treated as a severe error, and thus
the installer aborts and then goes back and cleans up after itself
deleting all of the previously installed files in the process (this same
behavior would occur if you had manually aborted the install).

"Eric Busch"
This is treated as a severe error, and thus

and is there a fix or workaround?

Eric,
Thanks for the info.  By exact timing of the message box, do you mean
in seconds?  Or in what order things happen?  Is it possible for me to
do a manual install?  Even if I have to edit the registry, I'll give
it a try.  Lastly, I do still have N4 installed, surely that wouldn't
make a difference?
One hell of a clean up program, :-) I even checked the registry, and
there is nothing in there for NR2002.
Thanks,
Andy
PS. I'm positive I'm logged on as Admin, just checked cause someone
suggested that here, and on the Sierra Boards.

Dave, I would "guess" that its a local problem due to a security setting he has on his XP install.
Andy, have you modified the security settings for the admin user or whatever user you are logging in
as?  I believe someone brought up the question to ask if you were installing the s/w as the
administrator?  Which I believe is pretty essential on NT based OS's.

NR2002 Won't Install?

by Andy » Thu, 11 Apr 2002 14:04:30

Biz,
I'm positive I'm logged as administrator, just checked twice.  I did
get a bit farther along though.  What I did, is when I got the box
about adding the AT&T icon to the desktop, I hit ctrl alt del, this
allowed me to tab out.  I check the HD, and the registry and all was
in order.  (all files seemed to be copied, registry entries were in
place)  So went back and just killed the NR2002 setup program from the
application tab.  All I should of done, was prevent it from installing
the shortcuts, and program group.  Now, when I pop the cd in, I get
the play button.  However, when I hit it, the cd spins and nothing
happens.  (I did run the config.exe file 1st, and it did its thing,
and said config info was saved.)  Also tried double clicking the
NR2002.exe file, and nothing there either.  Checked what processes
were running via ctrl-alt-del again, and at one point "wow" something
was running.  I didn't write down the complete name of the exe, but I
am pretty sure it was related to NR2002.
Maybe I have other issues.  I know I need a new video card, but that
isn't a option at the moment.  I'm seriously considering a reformat,
and doing a dual boot setup.
I really appreciate all the help and suggestions!

Same thing happened to me when setting it up. What I ended up having
to do is get the NoCD program for it. Now everything works perfectly.
Out of 5 people that bought it 2 of us have this issue.

NR2002 Won't Install?

by Andy » Fri, 12 Apr 2002 10:38:48

Thanks, that got me close!  I got the no cd patch from gamecopyworld,
and I can now get the intro movie!  After it plays, or I click the
mouse I am looking at a black screen.  The system isn't locked up,  I
can alt tab to WinXP and close NR2002. (Or tab back to the black
screen)
My desktop it set to 1280X1024 32bit, I'm running a V5 5500, with the
Amigamerlin 2.1drivers.  I ran the config, and picked D3D 800x600.
Any more ideas welcome!
Thanks
