Maybe NR2002 frame rates aren't as bad as 'we' think.

I picked up Dungeon Siege this weekend and at 1024 x 768 x 32 bit color I'm
running about 60 fps alone and dropping to around 25 fps in a fight. This
pretty much compares to my NR2002 frame rates. So maybe Papy's code isn't as
far off as we think they are. The only big difference I noticed is that DS
doesn't have near the jaggies as the Papy games do even at resolutions
higher than 1024.

Who said that Papy's code was slow? NR2002 runs great for the level of
graphic and physics detail that it has. Comparing it to a practically top
down hack and slash with limited view distances is pretty much pointless.
You will always have more jaggies in a racing game compared to something
like Dungeon Siege.

I have seen a lot of posts here and other places about how 'bad' Papy games
because they won't run with all the eye candy on a mid level system. I agree
with you that NR2002 does look alot better than a "hack and slash " game.
The whole point of my post was that the "hack and slash" should smoke NR2002
as far as frame rates go, but doesn't. Therefore Papy may have done more to
optimize their code than most of us realize.

Thats just bitter people complaining because they can't afford better systems....nothing new.  The
Papy games are done very well IMO, but if you want all the eye candy, you have to have a very good
system.  Doesn't make it any different than any other modern 3d sim, or game.

the jaggies doesn't have anything to do with the engine.  in a car
sim, you'll get lots of jaggies as you have lots of long, straight
edges.  in a dungeon you don't have lots of long straight edges. :)
