Hi,

does anybody know if there's a power shovel or backhoe simulator
for PCs around? I'd love to do some digging ...

Any suggestions welcome!

There's your first mistake, that brings out the smart-asses.  :)

I think there is/was some Tonka Construction game (they even
have/had a special controller for it) that might fit the bill, but I
don't know anything more about it.

Look for "Backhoe HEAT" in Q4 2001 -- we'll start work on that as soon
as we make it through the final release of CART Heat and IRL Heat!

Or maybe not . . .

Rumour has it that the West brothers are working on WBH (World Back Hoe) for
release Q2 of 2005 that will simulate night digging, wet weather
construction and internet digging for large construction projects.

Add-ons will include:

Water and natural gas mains and phone lines.
    Different shovel sizes
    pneumatic drill heads
    Hydraulic breakdowns
    Port-a-johns

But will it include the Great Case Model 580H Backhoe with 4 wheel drive.
And will anyone be making some Track hoe Addons like the Komatsu Track hoe
with a single stick and foot pedals?

That does sound good, but it's going to take more than Port-o-johns to
dethrone Backhoe Legends as the top backhoe simulator.

My God, a complete untapped genre here! It seems a natural for Tonka to get
into the software publishing business with.

I will immediately ditch my plans for an open source racing sim to tackle
this *** territory with a vast commercial market.

Never mind about a backhoe simulator, what about a forklift truck simulator?
With the steering wheels at the back they are great fun to drive, and
whizzing round in a circle raising the forks to the correct level at the
same time is quite a skill. Mmm, can't wait.

I think I'll go and lie down for a bit...

I heard BPL (Backhoe Prix Legends) was
was great but prove to be too much for some with its advanced physics.

And don't forget "Spirit of Dirt 1937."  Noted for
its lush painterly graphics and loving recreation
of the heavy equipment of yesteryear, it required
a special configuration utility just to get the
bucket into the ground....
