Does it help you to get better timing by watching how the real drivers handle
the tracks with the on-board cameras?

It may help a little bit, particularly if you watch the different lines
that drivers take as they negotiate through different corners. By watching the
way real-life drivers drive through the apex of  the corner and then observing
them as they accelerate out it is possible for the novice gamer who doesn't know
much about driving physics to pick up some invaluable information.

You may be interested to know that if you were to reverse your question and
ask whether or not real race car drivers can learn anything from a good driving
sim (such as Sportscar GT), the answer is most certainly yes. When Jacques
Villeneuve advanced from CART/PPG to FORMULA 1, he was faced with the revelation
that he had never seen or driven on many of the F1 circuits that he would be
competing on. Jacques readily admits that he used GP2 (the FORMULA 1 simulator)
in order to help him learn the basic track layouts instead of having to waste
valuable time during the 1st practice session doing so. Jacques has said that
although occasionally there may be minor discrepancies between the tracks in GP2
and the real-life circuits, on the whole he felt that the driving sim was very
beneficial.

Any idea if he is any good at GP2?  Which FF wheel does he use?

I think JV just used a sim for a couple of the tracks, and also, GP2 does not
support FF/

I guess it's like getting the drivers to show you their racing lines. No?

I recall hearing something about JV using GP2 to get familiarised with the
Spa circuit when he first drove there for Williams. IIRC his comments were
that it was a very hard game and probably not particularly realistic as he
only qualified right down the back.

Gee, my memory must be failing, as my recollection was that JV thought
the track depiction in GP2 was very good and he was able to take pole by
first familiarising Spa using it.

Cheers,
Rod.
