The Ultimate (GP) Racing Simulator is...

by Fazlur Rahma » Wed, 27 Jan 1999 04:00:00

...when somebody decides to create a simulation engine (with a very good
physics and computer AI model) and offer the code on the internet for
free (I am thinking a la Mozzila 5 here). Then leave it to the racing
sim fans to come up with driver AI's, car physics, track designs, car
designs, game graphics, sounds, user interface, game options etc.

I am sure this is possible. I am sure some programmers out there can
thrash out a pretty decent sim engine. We already know that many can
design great tracks cars, etc.

Anybody out there?

Ciao.

You must be kidding! Like GPL, and all the software technology that supports
it, was whipped together in a few short months by merely competent
programmers working after hours for free!

As a mechanical engineer, former sports car racer, and a guy that has made
his living for a number of years writing software, I can tell you I'm no
David Kaemmer! And there are NOT David Kaemmers on every street corner. If
you were fortunate enough to find one or more people with comparable skills,
talent, and experience, anywhere, I can tell you two things: 1) they would
be too busy to get involved in a project like you describe, and 2) they
don't work for free!

You should be appreciative of the exciting technology that David and crew
have made available to us. Take a look at the list of the credits in the
back of a GPL manual and consider that, from what I understand, some of
these people were involved in the GPL project alone for as long as three
years. The US$35-50 we invest to be a beneficiary of that hard work seems
like a bargain to me.

To suggest that something comparable could be pulled off by a collection of
moonlighters is a real affront to the entire Papyrus team.

I think it is cool.  Like a make your own game one.  Has the physics made
but has a 3d editor with it to design your cars, and you can adjust your
physics liuke handling and speed and power and all for the game and once you
make everything, then you hit like compile or publish and it puts it all
together.  Of course you couldnt have it where anyone can change your game
you made, it would have to be hardlocked at what you set it at so no one can
cheat on your game.  Good idea.

Okay. Perhaps I was wrong to make it sound as if anybody could write a decent
racing sim. What I had in mind was, the core simulation code could be written by
a professional (Kaemmer or Crammond, as is your preference)... sell or (if they
are mad enough like Netscape) offer the whole code for free on the net, and let
others come up with the frills, bells & whistles.

As you said, it is highly unlikely someone (who has put in thousands of
manhours/days research) would give away all the hard work to allow others to
bastardise. I may be naive, but couldn't these gurus leverage that somehow -
perhaps having the sim only be workable on a mega-server host for networked
racing (aside from single racing on the users' own PCs)? By then they would have
captured a large market of users of the code.

Yeah, I guess they could. I just don't think there's sufficient return in it
for them to do so. Remember that guys like us who hang out in this NG are in
the distinct minority...not their bread and butter, so to speak. And also,
wouldn't what you're suggesting, if third parties were successful in taking
advantage of it, detract from the sales of their existing and future
products? More motivation for them not to do it.

A nice idea though I can't see it happening.

Why not a "RACIX" like "LINUX" ?

Unlikely, but possible nevertheless...
