Okay. Perhaps I was wrong to make it sound as if anybody could write a decent
racing sim. What I had in mind was, the core simulation code could be written by
a professional (Kaemmer or Crammond, as is your preference)... sell or (if they
are mad enough like Netscape) offer the whole code for free on the net, and let
others come up with the frills, bells & whistles.
As you said, it is highly unlikely someone (who has put in thousands of
manhours/days research) would give away all the hard work to allow others to
bastardise. I may be naive, but couldn't these gurus leverage that somehow -
perhaps having the sim only be workable on a mega-server host for networked
racing (aside from single racing on the users' own PCs)? By then they would have
captured a large market of users of the code.
