A decent GPL computer???

by EDavid41 » Mon, 12 Apr 1999 04:00:00

Hello!

I'm about to get a new computer sometime this month.  I was wondering what
would be a good system that would run GPL?  I have a 200MHz, 64 meg ram, and a
Screamin 3d video card right now.  As you can tell, this is not even good to
race at the Ring in full detail :-)

I would like to race with 19 cars, some detail, and obviously a fast frame
rate.  A P 400 is looking good for me (budget wise).

Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks!!

The best deal is a celeron 400. It will overclock to 450mhz very easily and
even at 400mhz it is just as fast as the p2 400.

I have a Celeron 300a running 450 MHz, 128 Mb ram, and a Voodoo2 card.
That combination enables me to get 36 fps most of the time with all
graphic options on . So anything similar or better should be fine for
GPL.

I changed the soundcard to a SB Live! value recently, and that
improved sound quality and framerate compared to my old SB AWE32 card.

How did you overclock a Celeron 400 to 450? My assumption would be you
clocked it at 75mz (6 x 75) but I have read (over and over) this isn't
a stable setup for video timing issues. Now that the Celery 433s are
available I would say go with one of them, or go take a look at
www.computernerds.com and their guaranteed overclocked setup combos.
They had a 450mz overclocked bundle -- socket 370 Cel 300a, ABIT BH6,
and one of their (Excellent) coolers for $225.00 US last time I
looked...

I am overclocking the slot 1 400 to 450 with 6*75mhz.   Absolutely no problems
running on my AOpen AX6BC motherboard with 64mb of non-pc100 SDRAM.  Im using a
Diamond Stealth II S220 Rendition 4mb card.

Ive only heard of problem with 83mhz with some PCI peripherals.  I havent read
anything about problems with the 75mhz bus setting.

Again... my PC has been running at 450 since I bought the C400 2 months ago and
has been running absolutely great.

Now Im sure Ill go home and boot up my PC and the thing will fry or something ;)

This is 100% consistent with my overclocking experiences on a P2-233.  My periphials
and RAM were flawless at 75MHz, but did not like 83MHz.

Same here: Running a celeron 400 (ppga type) at 450/75mhz bus, just
fine (apart from texture problems in gpl with a voodoo I, so glide 2x
2.53 is not an option). The machine runs 24/7 (Linux of course,
looking for aliens, see www.setiathome.com ;-) so the cpu never gets
a rest, and it has been fine for two weeks now. I'll go for 500MHz if
it keeps up, but for now 450 is just fine.

I realize this has probably been asked before - I apologize...
Has anyone had any luck overclocking an AMD K6-2?  I have a 350mhz, and was
considering trying to nudge it to go a bit faster...
Thanks.

Make sure you have the "halt on error" setting DISABLED in the BIOS.
I had the same problem and it took me an hour to find out.

Kendall -
There is a setting in the SoftCPU Setup called Hold on Error or
something similar. You need to change this to No. Then try it.

Has anyone had any success at 6*83 for 500?

Kendall,

I honestly dont know... whatever the default is on the Celeron 400.  I did not
change any voltage settings.   I will have to take a look when I get home from work
tonight.
