Reading this newsgroup, it would seem that GPL is now THE game in the
racing.sim business.
But fantastic, I remember having a demo on one of my magazin CD ROMS.
I noticed the following:

-telling me I should have directx 5 while I have 6
-installing in a directory name in which sierra is obligated
-not being able to change the default steering keys
(why do all game man.f. think you want to break your fingers on the
numpad anyway)
-causing several lockups while selecting options
(total lockups in windows 98, yes  way to go!)
-driving (at last) still feels like floating around  in a weightless
soapbox just like every other racing game that has come out since GP2
-the sound is like an ancient pc-speaker game

Now please don't go telling me that i should have read some reame or
faq somewhere, or that my directx is too new , or something is wrong
with my hardware (PII 266 + voodoo2 monster3d + soundblaster AWE).
As far as games are concerned i am a user and not a technician.

GP2 can beat this by just pasting a 3 sticker on the old boxes.

Instead of basing your claptrap on a demo (and most likely a VERY old
one), go out, buy the sim, and actually try to drive it.  Only then will
you have the right to bash the sim.

I personally hate open-wheel racing, but GPL is far and away better than
N2/99.

IMHO, the most accurate and significant statement you make in your post.

Suggestions:

1. Develop an understanding of what it's like to drive a 400+ HP race car,
without aero aids, with hard bias-ply tires.

2. Don't expect to enjoy the latest generation game(s), to the fullest
extent possible, with hardware that is, sadly, outdated.

3. Get a wheel.

FYI, scores of people frequenting this group have DirectX 6 installed and
are enjoying magnificient GPL sound. Probably, even more have enjoyed GP2
for years and are now riveted by "THE game in the racing.sim business."

Oh , well you have jsut proven that you know very little about racing sims
and especially GPL.
BTW. never judge a game on it's demo. All the annoying installation bugs
have been corrected in the final version.

Wouldn't think of it.  Hans, your absolutely right.  These other guys
are probably just brain washed by Papyrus/Sierra propaganda.  Stick with
GP2.  GP3 will be out prety soon.

One can "gain an understanding" of splitting atoms, for example, without
having actually split one. So what's your point?

Incidentally, I believe that a few of the readers of this newsgroup are
currently driving in competition in REAL racing automobiles, and many of us
are former competitive drivers, so we do know what it feels like to have a
car "floating around," as Mr. Heintz put it, and know that GPL does an
amazingly good job of reproducing that sensation.

Absolutely.

The release version runs fine with DirectX 6, although if you have a
Voodoo based accelerator, you will want the 2.53 version of glide2x.dll.

Still does this, but I can live with it.

I have no idea.  This is a realistic sim that requires far more subtle
input than the keyboard can allow.  Get a wheel or at least a joystick.

All the Windows 98 problems with the demo are fixed in the release
version.

In my opinion (which is shared by many others apparently) GPL has by far
the best feel of any racing sim on the market.  Papyrus did an
unprecedented job in modeling the physics of a race car.

The sound in the demo, if I remember correctly, was temporarily borrowed
from NASCAR.  The sound in the release is awesome.  The different
engines have very distinct sounds.  GPL is worth the price just to hear
the incredible, *** curling howls of the Ferrari V12.

Okay, I won't.

Pretty strong opinion for someone playing the demo with keys.  I am a
HUGE fan of GP2 and played this fanatically for two years, but GPL is
the same quantum leap above GP2 as GP2 was to the competition when it
came out in 1996.  Actually, even more so.

Another great thing about GPL are the tracks that it comes with - the
old Nurburgring, the original Spa, Monza before it was emasculated with
chicanes, Mosport, Zandvoort, Kyalami, Rouen, etc.

My advice - get a wheel or joystick and get GPL.

So stay with GP2 and quit trolling for flames, your loss.

Correct, no argument from me......

So, lets get this straight, you are basing this *opinion* on one of
the GPL demo's...........hmmmm.
Perhaps you should actually try the *full* product before posting such
a strong message? (just a suggestion).

I played both the demo's (Watkins Glen & Monza) and both had flaws,
(and even the demo's wiped the floor with *most* of the then
opposition, IMHO) as did the Warez version many people used. But none
of these were the finished article, doesn't that tell you something?

I now have the full product, and most, if not all the points you
mention are no longer valid complaints in the final release, except
not being able to change the default steering keys. But why would you
want to drive a sim using keys anyway? To get the feel of any decent
driving game or sim, you really do need a wheel and pedal set-up, or
at the very least a decent joystick?

Unfortunately, and I'm sure you will *not* want to hear this, but a
266 really isn't at the cutting edge of technology anymore. And GPL
really needs a 300+ cpu to get the full benefit of this excellent
program (preferably a 450!)

I am also a die hard GP2 fan, and have driven GP2 since the day it was
released in the UK. However, I know when to move on to something
better. GP2 was (and still is) a fantastic program, (and I still
drive it now and again) but alas, its time has now passed. It has no
3D graphics, its sound is not up to todays heady levels, and even its
awesome physics modelling has now been surpassed.

Sorry, but these are simple facts, accept them and move on..... Your
not gonna convince anyone of anything different by posting this
drivel. If you are gonna compare products, at least try and make it
constructive.

Do you really believe that? I mean, I'm not ashamed to admit that I am a
-huge- fan of GP2 (walks all over F1RS IMHO) but the fact is that GPL is
much the better sim. It's just on another level. GP2 is fantastic but
it's been superseded now.
