I was browsing through a copy of PC Format Gold which is dedicated to PC
driving games this time. Inside the back cover was an ad for a new F1
game called "Johnny Herbert's Formula 1 98".
The graphics looked quite nice, from what I could see, and it said it
was set for release in April. One of the more interesting points was an
internet tournament supporting upto 1000 players, which starts in
September.
Does anyone know anymore information about the game ? Whether it will be
a full on simulation (like F1RS) or more arcadish (like Formula 1 '97).
Also, anyone know the website of the developers ?

What's wrong with Johnny Herbert? He's a good driver, and before his
accident, he would have been a multiple world champion by now.

Tell it brother!! Johnny Herbert was one of the few who looked like he was
pushing his car yesterday... well Saturday...ummm....well whenever that darn
race was ( thank you ESPN ). Sauber made a great choice in Herbert, and
probably got him real cheap too! Don

Don't like the sound of a game centred around a sportsman's name. My
money says it will be purely a money making venture.

granted F1RS doesn't look like all too much of a money making venture for
Ubisoft, due to less than enthuastic sales.

But are u trying to suggest that companies are making F1 sims, to be sims, and
not to make money?

You must be on a different planet. It was sold out in every store I
tried here in Sydney 1 week after release! I got lucky in a little known
games shop. Maybe the reason for the slow sales where you are is due to
the fact that it has not been released there yet? Intense studies have
revealed that unreleased games tend to suffer in the sales dept!

Er, but have you actually seen the sales figues, for the UK market? (surely
what must be along with germany the most important market for an F1 sim.)

Disappointing to say the least. And yes it's been on general release since
Xmas.

I guess some of the problem with F1RS is the 3D card requirement. Who can
tell?

Anyway, F1RS is easily the best of all the 3D-stock of racing sims, but while
i enjoy playing it, and the F-F support, It has not surpassed GP2, in my mind.

Perhaps its also to do with the box and the publicity its had. Barring this
newsgroup I hadnt heard about it until a small review in last months
PCFormat, and certainly going by the box design I decided not to buy it
because it looked just like an arcade game (with the fancy graphics and
licences and suchlike).

You pretty well saved me a post there. I think the 3 main points here
are

1/ 3D card requirement

2/ Poor Advertising

3/ Some clueless reviewers

Here in Sydney, the best games mag gave it a very mediocre review by
a totally clueless reviewer. His sirname was "Wildgoose". Need I say
more? And then we have CGW's CPR review. Seems not many reviewers have
much of a clue when it comes to sims. I suppose it takes to long to find
out what's good and what's not. F1RS gets better with time. CPR gets
worse.

That's pretty common. German game mags go bananas everytime they review
a motor sport sim, let alone an American one (e.g. Nascar). One even had
a special booklet for CPR (glossy and all) included. And some of the
comments
they utter about realism in sims is just ludicrous...
