GPL-car setup help?

by BRI » Tue, 05 May 1998 04:00:00

Hey, I would like to get into GPL demo a little more but the stock car setup
is very squirrly.  Can someone give me some setup info to get a good feel
for this sim. I have a MS FFB stick as well as a TM Nascar wheel if that
makes a difference.
Thanks, Brian

You must be kidding!

1) car setups can't be altered in any way. You'll have to wait for the
release version to do that.

2) driving GPL with anything else than a wheel is absurd. Don't even think
about it.

I really am sorry to disagree with what is obviously subject about which
you are very passionate, but using a good joystick, particularly if done
in combination with a set of pedals, is an excellent choice for a
control system.
In fact, the Papyrus developers have used this type of arrangement.

Could you suggest a good joystick for use in driving sims (in particular
GPL)? I have an old Kraft stick which works OK, but the buttons are
positioned awkwardly and it makes shifting a bear. I have a Nascar Pro
wheel/pedals combo and I assume that any joystick will work in place of the
wheel unit?

Thanks,

Funny that you say that you ahve an old Kraft, Patrick, as a good friend
of mine uses one of these and absolutely loves it!

I use a Gravis Analogue.....it's about 5 years old now but is as good as
the day I bought it.  I use it in conjunction with the pedals from a T1
unit.

Another friend uses a standard MS Sidewinder and likes that.

I think it is really a matter of trying something for yourself because
our likes may not be all the same.  I had been using the T1 wheel/pedal
arrangement for ages with my driving sims, going back to ICR1 and GP2
when first released.  It has only been fairly recently that I have
discovered that steering with a joystick and acclerating/braking with
the pedals is a darn good combination.  It works beautifully in the GPL
demo......far, far better control over the cars' handling...it's easier
(relative term!) to catch the back end as it starts to step out of line.

I enjoy this control arrangement so much in GPL that i have now adopted
it as standard for all my driving sims....and even for flying sims as
the pedals serve as the rudder pedals!!

Yes, it should is the connection is the same as for the T1/T2
controllers.

Bruce,

Not wishing to harp on (too much) about this subject but....

Whilst I can understand the desire to maximise the control in GPL to improve
your lap times, I personally can't come to terms with the fact that Papyrus
have gone to such lengths to create such a realistic sim that you can feel
comfortable 'driving' with such an unrealistic controller as a joystick.

By which I mean the cars of the era had steering wheels with manual gear
changes.

By the sound of it you do have such a controller but choose not to use it.

If a patch was made available on the net to add wings to GPL cars that
actually provided you with downforce, I'm sure you would treat it with
disdain. Is the 'replace your GPL steering wheel with an F16 fly by wire
joystick patch'  not in the same league?

Cheers

Tony
