GPL 2 - what we want to see

by Paul Jone » Sun, 13 Dec 1998 04:00:00

My friend and I have been talking about what we would like from a Son of
GPL. We decided that the program is so good that we were only concerned
about which F1 seasons it should model. We came up with three
contenders:
1. 1957 to give us the opportunity to race the cars the immortal Juan
Manuel Fangio drove (Sterling Moss as well). Only eight GPs this year
but with the old Nurburgring circuit, the 25km Pescara circuit and the
full Monza circuit with the embedded oval, there's enough milage here to
keep us going for a little while. There's also the oval in Indianapolis
as well as the Aintree circuit. And those fantanstic looking cars.
2. !976 to be able to drive that huge array of wierd new shapes
including the six wheeled Tyrell driven by Patrick Depailler. Nicky
Lauda, James Hunt, Mario Andretti, Jody Scheckter, Jochen Mass and
Ronnie Peterson were among the other drivers that year. Brands Hatch was
used that season - the most under-represent circuit in sims - fancy
Paddock in a GPL car! Monza has been neutered but the full Nurburgring
is there, Long Beach, Watkins Glen, Interlagos, Anderstorp, Mount Fuji,
Paul Ricard, Jarama and others.
3. 1998 - so we try our luck against Schumacher in moden F1 with GPL's
physics. I guess a lot depends on whether Mr. Ecclestone will be
charging his exhorbitant licence fees for this on.

But what about say 1982 or so?  Get a nice contrast between reliable and
nimble Williams-Cosworths, and Brabhams, etc. and the rather brutal Renault
RE's with all that horsepower.

193x - Might be "slow" but could still be great fun.
1976 - Good tracks, Great cars, Top drivers.
1985 - 1200bhp. Need I say more....

Cheers!

1957 saw Fangois famous win at the Ring, but I would prefer to see
(and race against) him in a 1955 Mercedes, just like Moss. Plus, this
year has the Monza bankings also.

For the last time. :-(

What about the 1930s?
Mercedes, Auto Union, Alfa Romeo?
With 646hp (200hp *more* than in GPL!) on the Ring, in Spa and Moncao?

Other than which season to model, I'd like the ability to run a career
mode in GPL (similar to Viper). The way this would work is that you'd
start off in a lower formula (Formula Ford, maybe even karts) and work
up through F3, F3000, then F1 (or whatever). In each class you'd have
the ability to move between teams, drive better cars etc. To top all
this off I'd like the ability to get injured or even die racing - this
would make the sim very realistic, and might make the hotlappers slow
down a bit...

would be great!

Mercedeses, Rear-engined Auto Unions, Ferrari-entered Alfa's, races at the
Nurburgring, Avusring, Monza, Spa, Monaco...

so many compatative cars that year: Ferrari, Lotus, McLaren, Tyrell,
Brabham.....

I, however, miss some other great years:

mid-fifties: great cars :Lancia-Ferrari D50, Vanwall, Maserati 250F,
Mercedes 196, first Loti, Coopers. I think it would be acceptable to
have all these cars in one game altough they did't acually race in the
same year.

early seventies: same atmosphere as in 1967, but cars that are easier to
drive.

1979/80: Unrestricted wing-cars, first turbo-engines, beautiful
Ferrari 312T4/T5. It would be great to be able to choose between the fast
but hard to drive and unreliable early turbo-cars and the slower but
easier and reliable athmospheric cars.

Greetings, Han
