welcome to the party, GP2 has long been the standard to which other
open wheeled racing sims have tried to reach. I think you were lucky to
find a copy, AFAIK the copies were to have been pulled on Dec. 31st as
Microprose no longer has the license.
As for the video resolution, you could not hurt with a 4 meg vid card
but the real factor in GP2 is processor speed. If your framerate is OK
and all the details are turned on then that's all you're gonna' get. The
graphics in GP2 are looking pretty dated by now, but the driving physics
are first rate. Probably still the best in the sim business for open
wheeled cars.
As for the GP1 wheel, if I can remember right you set it up as a
"custom" setup (it lets you name the setup) and then just go in to the
dialog boxes and configure the controls. You may or may not need the
little converter plug, it seems to me I had to use mine to get the wheel
to set up correctly.
There it is, I hope I answered a question or two. My favorite was alway
Monaco, where the close in distances make the graphics pretty cool. One
thing I can't resist adding, when you see Monaco in F1RS, in 3dfx glory,
the cars throwing water plumes and mist while racing in the rain... I
for one just about had to change my shorts. After you drive the wheels
off of GP2, pick up a 3dfx card and F1RS, and you too can change your
shorts, it runs fine on a P166.
All the best, Mike Davis
