Can anyone give me the low down on the racing scene over in
Compuserve.

Is the forum open to all?
What is the level of noise?
What's the standard of the drivers? (they seem pretty hot from John
Wallace's posts)
What (in)formal competitions are run?

It's been some time since I've been on Compuserve (and then only for
work purposes :(  ), but I might be tempted to go back for this reason
alone!

Thanks in advance,
Richard

:Is the forum open to all?

All Compuserve members can join - GO SPRTSIMS and it's section 14.

:What is the level of noise?

Quite loud as we run over the cats in the pitlane :-) Seriously, it's
all good clean nonsensical fun.

:What's the standard of the drivers? (they seem pretty hot from John
:Wallace's posts)

We've got some incredibly fast guys, and me. There's a good mix of
competition. I hold the record for having the highest DNF rate in the
series - about 66%!

:What (in)formal competitions are run?

There's a half-season of GP2 starting now at the Hungaroring. There's
usually a few off-season races, with no prizes except the honour of
winning. We also have an annual Derm Quinn race at Silverstone that
MPS have sponsored for the last two years, with random prizes handed
out.

Hope to see you there!

Hi Richard,

I surely can, I spent most of my on-line time over there!

Absolutely, from the fastest to the slowest (and I'm not kidding!) :)

Virtually zero. Especially coming from r.a.s. you will be shocked!

All levels. In GP2 the top guys are Team ATB (Michael Wollenschein and
Ralf Tzschoppe), Achim Trensz, Georg Naujoks, Markus Schordan, Mark
Guest, Paul Knapper, Miguel Correia etc. Many of these guys you may
recognise from Sim News track guides. On the other hand there are also
complete beginners who are racing at rookie level. Some of the "famous"
guys like Trevor Kellaway and Gerhard Lingenberg also race there.

There are leagues for NASCAR (4 sections), ICR2 (4 sections), and GP2
(three sections). Section means different difficulty level. Races are
always ongoing following the real season events, and hotlaps are
submissable at any time. In the F1 section we also run "Hot Races"
(invented by Markus Schordan" which are a lot of fun. These are a bit
like hotlaps, except in a race format. Start from the back of the grid
in a 10% distance race, you must wait AFTER the green for 15 seconds and
then take off and see how quickly you can complete the 10 laps while
fighting through traffic. This was done to develop race setups, but
became an event - good fun.

The leagues are all run by volunteers and are _VERY_ well managed, but
mainly it's just a lot of laughs over there. The people are good fun and
very helpful, always willing to give advice or share setups.

Try it, I would really recommend it. The first race of the GP2 season
was announced yesterday at Hungaroring, so come on over and join in :)

Cheers!
John

Thanks for the info Ken, I've decided to take a look see, so I expect
I'll be seeing you there.

Just one point from your post:

I find it helps to lock them out of the racetrack (OK, room). It does
nothing to improve your times to have 16lbs of battle scarred fur leap
onto you with claws outstretched <G>

Cheers,
Richard

Talking of the sprtsims forum, I was running a GP2 race at silverstone
last night and after the finish I decided to have a closer look at one
of the guys holding the green flag. To my horror he appeared to be
covered in green slime (Jello?). What I want to know is who over there
is F1SA HQ, is responsible.

It is one of the few things that would tempt me back on Compuspend. Now
I have GP2 you might just see me back.

Hi Ken,

Do you remember me? We've met at the F1SA meeting at Cologne last
year... Anyway: When will be the deadline for the race mentioned
above? I'ld like to give it a try but I don't know whether I'll have
the time for it...

Thanks!

Bye,
    Hartmut
