Grand Prix Legends: which circuits?

by H.E. Boer » Sat, 19 Apr 1997 04:00:00

Hi there! I have a couple of questions regarding this "dream come true"
simulator:

1. Which circuits were raced on in the 1967 season and which circuits are
in the sim.
I can imagine that the famous Nordschleife that was (and still is!) more
than 22 kilometers long, is too long to make it into this sim. Even
Spa-Franchorchamps was
14 kilometers long back then.

2. How was (is?) the research done? In 1967 there were no onboard-camera's,
no computer-data, no live TV coverages and a lot of the tracks have changed
considerably since then. In other words: how real are the tracks, scenery,
grip levels, etc.

For now,

Cheers,

Harald

The list of tracks is on my site (see my sig for the URL). Papy
mention that the sim will include 11 tracks, and '67 had an 11 track
season, including Spa and the Nordschleife. I too am wondering how
they will cram them in...

They are apparently watching the movie "Grand Prix" for a lot of the
data. However, there are no shots of a lot of the circuits in the
movie. The only ones that feature heavily are Monaco, Monza, and Spa,
and there are no shots at all of Silverstone, Mosport, Watkins Glen,
or the Nordschlieffe. However, there is plenty of stock footage
(including in-car) of these tracks around, and in the case of the
Nordschleiffe they could just go out and drive it to pick up the data
as it exists more or less identically today as it was in the 60s. The
same is true of Spa as the old track was mainly on public roads

And I wonder? There are a lot of those drivers still out there that I
bet would love to share their memories of how they drove those
circuits! Has anyone talked to Sir Jack Brabham? How 'bout Dan 'AAR'
Gurney? the treasure of those two minds alone would fill volumes in
technique of the times.

I am sure they would look at getting some technical help in on this.
Of course, Dan Gurney and Sir Jack are still quite involved in racing
- Brabham took part in one of the support races at the Long Beach Indy
(sorry C.A.R.T.) race last weekend, so they should be that difficult
to persuade.

Go to any half-decent motoring bookshop and there are dozens of books
relating driver's experiences on these older circuits.

It's the same with the question "How  can Papyrus accurately map these old
circuits?".........there's plenty of video footage out there!!
