by Im not Iron M » Wed, 08 Dec 1993 05:48:36

Hey there.... I have a simple question:  Will IndyCar work w/4 megs?  I have
all local bus stuff (vid/hd) and a 486dx33.

If if does work, does it work well.

I wanna know because: a) im stuck on campus and cant go to a mall and see for
myself
                      b) want to get it for christmas, and dont really trust my
parents to know if it's compatible or not.

thanx in advance.....

You are correct it needs a minimum of 4 megs.  I am not even sure if it
will run properly on a 25.  I am using a 386/40dx and I know that will work
with out any problems.  Also, I have heard if you are trying to run it
with the GUS and only 4megs forget it.  I haven't heard of anyone to
get it to run with a GUS yet.

INDYCAR works just fine with 4 Megs RAM. That is all I have. I get all the
tracks, plus 32 opponants. You will need the patch to version 1.02 though.

To run in 4MB, get the patch (world.std.com, /vendors/papyrus).

To use the Gravis Ultrasound, use SBOS -o3.

INDYCAR QUESTION

Well, I've managed to get IndyCar to work with 4meg and a GUS using SBOS -o3
and the 1.02 patch for ICR.  However, I'm wondering if anyone has managed to
get this MegaEM Sound Blaster emulation that Gravis has distributed to work?
As far as Gravis's claims that the GUS sounds better than a SB go, I say
listen to MicroProse's World Circuit on a SoundBlaster and on a GUS running
SBOS and try to make that claim with a straight face.  The SoundBlaster sounds
like the in-car video from ESPN... the GUS with SBOS sounds like a tin whistle.

While I'm typing I'll offer my thoughts on some other posts.  I agree that the
one negative aspect of WC is the inability to take different lines with steering
help on, and the inablility to control the car with it switched off... I'm in the
process of soldering together a wheel with 270 degrees of motion to alleviate this
problem.  However, I DO like the fact that I can shut off all the superfluous
texture mapping and run the game at 25 fps for an excellent "feel".  Next to this
ICR's 15 fps max looks choppy.  I say Papyrus should let those of us who don't
give a damn about sponsor decals really bump up the frame rate and DRIVE!!

Where can you get the patch?  Please don't say Compu$erve...

It's on world.std.com in /vendors/papyrus, called icr102.zip
You can anonymous ftp it.

You won't get it to work with MegaEm, as both MegaEm and IndyCar's DOS
Extender want to control protected mode.

Forte is working on 32-bit AIL drivers that should give the GUS better
sound than you heard on the Soundblaster.  No, I don't have a release
date.

At least with SBOS -o3 the game is not silent, but I agree that the sound
sucks compared to a real SB.

How about 386DX/25 with 8M, S3-801/1M graphics card ?
Should it be O.K. ?
