Indycar: Questions from a rookie

  Hello Experts,

Please tolerate a few questions about ICR from an amateur.  I only
purchased the game last friday.  I is enjoyable but with a difficult
  learning curve.
  Q's:
  -  I see there was a list of fast times posted.  I dont have all of those
tracks and I dont remember anything about getting them in the manual.
     I dont even have
Indianapols.  What is the deal?  We are talking Indycar Racing by
Papyrus (sp?)?   I guess I should check the Ver#.  I hope I didnt buy
     an old one (sh*t).

  -  I started with Long Beach.  After much work I am down to 1min laps (no
joystick).  It seems to me that this course and probably all the road
courses take work (learning the track) to go fast; car setup seems not
that big of deal (at least when you are still at 1min laps).  Aggree?

  -  In contrast, the ovals seem to
be all setup.  I am working on Michigan, I finally got to 222 or so when
I added a bunch of wing but I dont see how to progress more. Is driving
technique that important on the ovals?  I cant seem to get around without
squealing (and heating) the tires.  There seems to be no way to stay
low on the track.  Any hints?

Thanks.  Post (if it is of general interest) or send Email.

All of the tracks that didn't come with the original release of ICR, came in
two upgrade packs released some time later. This includes Indianapolis.

I too am still in the learning curve of ICR (although i've been here for
some time now....sniff!).  So far I've come to master only 1 (!)
track....New Hampshire.  I can do just under 182 mph in qualifying and
also win the race at 106% opponant strength.  Setups are crucial on ovals.
I spent at good amount of time getting the tire pressure/chamber right so
that temp across the face of each tire were uniform. Also pay attention to
tire compound at each corner of the car (aim for a running temp of 230-300
degrees). Tweek the wings so you can still get around the corners with too
much push and without being "loose".  Run with only as much fuel as is
necessary to finish the race (it seems comp. cars ALWAYS fill up, even if
there's only a few laps to go???). As for driving, yes this is also a BIG
factor on ovals. Try to stay on the line (tire marks help) when
approaching corners. This should minimize screeching and maximize speed. I
always seem to get through corners much faster than the other cars....even
though they appear to be on the line.

Once I can finish a full length race with 32 cars (my bet so far is 50%
race with only 16 cars), I'll move on to other tracks. I really had
trouble with the street tracks....but now I have pedals and a steering
wheel I'm starting to feel more convident.

Chhers!

You want LESS wing on ovals - as low as possible. If the car isn't at
the edge of sliding into the wall, you aren't going fast. 240mph laps are
achieved with 3.0/3.0 wings - the problem then is to keep the car glued
to the track. And: don't use the keyboard - you will never get the control
needed to run really fast.
