OT: CART to race in F1 circuit in 2002!

Speaking of CART.. I just read on Autosport.com that the Champcars will
visit a *former* F1 venue next season :-)
They've made a 4 year deal that sees them holding races at Autodromo
Hermanos Rodriguez near Mexico City.   The track, whilch is also featured in
GPL (old version that is) hosted an F1 race as late as 1992.  (Won by Nigel
Mansell in Williams if my memory serves me right...)

Should be really cool to see the Champcars on this nice track :-)

Indeed it will. And the basic track layout is very equal to the GPL
track, apart from the following:

- A chicane before T1
- T1 is now a right-left-right configuration
- The approach to the hairpin is shorter
- Another chicane before the entrance to the last corner

The funny thing about this Mexico City race is that the organizers
already had 150.000 enquieries about tickets when the race was still a
rumour. The stand capacity will be 300.000 and they talk about 100.000
more in general admission. How they are going to cram 400.000 people
around the track is a different question, but in the end of the day it
will outnumber the Indy500 as the biggest one day sporting event. :)

Lest we all forget why F1 no longer visits Mexico City: riots that make
Europe's soccer hooligans look like the Vienna Boys Choir!

But look how CART is having to try to beat the Indy 500.  Let's see now,
shall we?

Indianapolis: population ~1million,  Indy 500 attendance: 400-450,000
Mexico City: population ~22million,  Hopeful attendance: 400-450,000

And it gets better when they look to China for the hope there.  CART is
having to go to huge areas of dense population in order to equal
attendance for a race in the MidWest United States in a rather small city.

No race that CART can come up with will ever replace the stature of the
Indy 500.  They've tried before (US500) and they now appear to be trying
again.  The race can be quite good, but it will never replace Indy in any
shape or form.

Plus 250million throughout the country that travel a LONG way to see
one of the most historical and famous races today.

I don't think they're even considering trying to replace the Indy 500.
That's almost impossible, the race has close to 100 years of history
behind it. I think they're simply trying to put on new races in new
markets, expanding the series globally. And they're doing alright, if
they quit all this ridiculous politics and controversy they seem to
love.

All in all, looks like it'll be a fantastic race. :)

I'm glad you realize, too, that it's not the IRL that CART is having a problem
upstaging, it's the Indy 500. I truly think there would be just as many people in
the stands if the race consisted of Barber Dodge students and cars. 3/4 of the crowd
is there for Jim Neighbors(sp?), the balloons, the party, or just to say they've
been there. I know... I've only missed 5 since '81.

Warlock!
