Actually, someone brought up the idea that Jack could have been met some
misfortune.  There was genuine concern from a few people who actually hadn't
thought of that,  myself and Andre included.  But Jack popped up on the group,
said he was fine, but just hadn't had time to 'finish' the program.  Then he
vanished again.  Others offered to help, or even take over development, but
never heard anything, AFAIK.  Who knows anymore...?

Technically, Jack IS a liar.  He said that GPal would be out on a certain date.
It wasn't.  That makes him a liar.  A fraud is someone who promises something
they can't (or won't) deliver.  Again, that description DOES fit Jack. Now the
reasons WHY it isn't out can be speculated about and discussed, but both points
are currently factual and correct.  Personally, I've written the program off.
If it ever sees the light of day, and does what was promised, I'll be one of
the first people offering congrats, thanks, whatever.  I'm not holding my
breath, though.

Hehehe.  I'll respect that.  With an attitude like yours, I think the

Oh come on Remco, it was all in good fun. I was looking forward to
GPaL, and I was very disappointed after the release date got delayed a
couple of times (understandable) and that suddenly Jack disappeared
without letting us know what would happen to GPaL (not understandable
after he hyped it so much).

I was on the beta-tester/distributer team, he mailed me that there
only was a problem with the installerer, and that it would took him a
couple of hours extra to solve that problem. Last thing I heard from
him, he also never replied to my emails after that.

Maybe Jack was too optimistic and realized that he promised us a
little bit too much, that he couldn't make his promises become
reality, but disappearing from the scene after all the hype was
without any style, and was asking for reactions like these.
If he simple would have admitted that he couldn't finish GPaL, for
whatever reason, everybody would have understand, and I'm sure many
would have offered help to finish GPaL.

I can understand your reaction, calling Jack a liar and a fraud sounds
harsh, but I hope you can understand my reaction when people still ask
about GPaL, people stumble upon the GPaL site (GPaL is allmost
finished, sign the mailing list!) and keep asking about it, while Jack
doesn't appear here anymore.

Your statement that I can't comment on the whole GPaL case because I
didn't release something for the GPL community (I think I offer my
help often enough actually) doesn't make any sense to me at all by the
way. That would mean that people only can comment on racing sims when
they have released a racing sim themselves...

the program itself was almost ready? Just curious...

No, I never tested any version. I can't remember exactly what the
planning was, but as far as I can recall Jack would mail a couple of
people, including me, a copy of GPaL before it was released to the
public, to do some quick beta testing on various systems.
On the evening when we should receive the beta version, he mailed us
all that it would take him a couple of hours to fix a little problem
with the installer, and that he would mail it within 4 (or so) hours.
I stayed up until 7 AM, checking my mail every 5 minutes...
I got just a little bit mad when I never heard from him after that...

Nope. You're a liar if you KNOW that what you say isn't true. In
Jack's case, you can't prove it...

Nope again. A fraud is someone who is doing it on purpose. Again, you
can't prove this in Jack's case...

He did explain the situation here... (In short, he said his
harddrive collapsed. He lost all his source code)

He should have answered you, I agree with that.

I agree that after all this hype Jack should have been more clear. But
I believe there were major problems in Jack's personal life.

Here I disagree, since you can't prove that Jack is a liar and/or
fraud. IMO you may attack Jack's PR approach, but telling lies is
going too far. Don't forget that this is a public forum.

Actually, I didn't say such a thing.

He said there was only a little problem with the installer, and after
a couple of weeks he told us that his hard drive collapsed and that he
lost all his backups. I never believed this. Can't prove it, just a
wild guess, but it all seemed like a big excuse.

ok

He was too busy with his new job he said to be precize.
Again, in his last mail he sent me, he told me that GPaL was ready,
and that he only had to sort out the installer problem. That should be
possible in a year, even if you have such a busy job?

GPaL Tonight!!!
No GPaL Tonight!!!
What's that? Call it what you want, a fake promise, too much
positivity, or a lie...

You said:

Ok, I didn't give something to the GPL community (except my help), so
what? If you didn't mean 'shut up Andre, we didn't get anything from
you, so don't start about GPaL', what did you mean by this?

I meant, it can be very frustrating to create something for free, only
to be critizised...you only know how that feels when you've been in
that situation  yourself.

BTW, I'm not defending Jack's actions here. I just thought that
calling Jack a liar and fraud in public isn't fun anymore....

Ok, I didn't understand that you meant it that way. I can imagine very
well how that would be. Yet, if Jack would have handled things
differently (sorry guys, I promised too much, can't hold those
promises) it would have been a completely different story than the way
he handled things now (ie not responding at all).

Ok, that was a little bit out of line (just a little bit, mind you).
Jack was a nice fellow, one of the more prominent figures in the GPL
scene. I just can't understand why he doesn't respond here on RAS at
all. He knows people are waiting and wondering about GPaL, no matter
how busy he is, surely he can tell us something?

By the way, he posted this post on 22/9/99:

I understand that there has been some speculation, but does anybody
know whatever happened to that GPaL thing?

Thanks in advance. ;)

Jack Rambo

REALLY annoyed me, especially since he didn't post anything after that
message...

You know Remco, every night when I go to sleep, I hear these
Southpark-like voices whispering in my ear... gjeepaaal gjeeepaaal

Uh, you can be sued for fraud(in the US anyway) if you don't deliver what you
promised.  Whether it's on purpose or not doesn't matter.  We'll just have to
agree to disagree on this. I see Andre's comments as a running joke we have
aroung here...

Fraud is:
1. The intentional misrepresentation of a material fact.
2. Made for the purpose of a specific person relying on it.
3. That specific person did, in fact rely on it.
4. By relying on it, that specific person suffered a loss.

These four elements must be present to prove fraud "in the U.S.".

Hehe.

I was joking of course. Does anyone remember the first drummer in Spinal Tap
dying in his horticultural haven. I believe all of the others spontaneously
combusted.

I did actually see Jack on VROC not so long ago. Wonder if he runs under an
assumed name these days?
The guy lost all credability simply by his lack of honest openness.
