nascar lock up problems PLEASE HELP

by ANDRE LEVASSEU » Mon, 05 Aug 1996 04:00:00

Lets start off with the basics this is my hardware;

                        1)100 pentium
                        2)16 meg of RAM
                        3)opti 16\generic sound blaster 16
                                Port:240 IRQ:10 DMA:0
                        4)GameCard III
                        5)Trustmaster T2
                        6)Nascar Ver. 1.21
                        7)Win 95 ( I don't use win 95 to run the game I use the F8
                        feature on startup)

Here is the problem,

When I use the auto detect feature it finds "Microsoft Sound System 8 Stero", using
PORT:530/IRQ:7/DMA:1 that is not what my machine uses acording to the divice manager in
the control pannel. After trying this a thousand times it has found my card maybe twice.
When Auto detect doesn't work I manually input the correct info, most times it will not
confirm the card, it tells me that the Info I gave is incompatable with my system. So I
skip confermation and go to start up the game

NOW after all that.

When I start up the game, befor the opening screen the game scrolls the opening credits
when it gets to comfirming the sound card my machine locks up right after it displays
the PORT/IRQ/DMA. This happens at least 95% of the time. You have to PLEASE help me!! It
to the point where I cant sleep at night. Also my wife has hidden all the hammers in
fear of a slight lapse in judgement.

Thank You for all your time & effort

                                                Andre

What is your config.sys & autoexec.bat?  The "control" panel will more
than likely have nothing to do with your setup for s DOS session.
Unless you specify the same setup in your config.sys/autoexec.bat

Suggestions:

If you are using Win95's F8 feature, it is possible that a driver for
the soundcard is not being loaded. Maybe you have to install it the
autoexec.bat?

You're using a gamecard. Is the joystick port on the soundcard
disabled? This is often a source of major trouble.

Does the gamecard use an IRQ? Possible conflict? Do you have other
cards (modem, network, etc.) that might lead to an IRQ conflict? What
about the CD-ROM IRQ?

If nothing of the above helps, try the following. Beware, it might
mean doing some complicated things with hard- and software:

- Set the soundcard to address 220, IRQ 5, DMA 1. (Provided these are
available, i.e. not used by other hardware. 220/5/1 are standard
Soundblaster values.) I mean, physically make the soundcard work in
accordance with these values. It is possible that you have to change
jumpers on the soundcard to do this. Refer to the documentation.

- If your soundcard requires a river to be soundblaster compatible,
make sure you load it with the appropriate switches in autoexec.bat.

- In the game setup, manually select Soundblaster 16 and enter the
variables. If that does not work, select Soundblaster 8bit mono (or
similar).

Hope this helps.

P.S.: One thing I found most valuable when playing DOS games on Win95
machines: Get hold of a copy of DOS 6.22. Make a C:\dos directory and
copy all DOS files there. (You have to extract the files manually,
using "expand". I worte a batch file which speeds things up, if you
want it, I can mail it to you.) Make a DOS startdisk, including
appropriate autoexec and config files. Now, you can start the computer
like it was one of the good ole DOS/Win 3.x machines, without ever
seeing a trace of Win95... ;)

Another thing to do is to set the game up with SB 8 Stereo.
Using the default port and IRQ settings.  When you start the
game start it with the -f option.  I had a card that wasn't quite
SB compatible enough to be detected, but when I used the -f option
it worked like a charm.
