Try turning "particles" off. They seem to make a major difference in the
smoothness of the game on the VooDoo 5.
From a quality standpoint, 4x non-uniform sampling using either jittering or
something like 3dfx's "rotated grid sampling" should look better than twice
the resolution without FSAA. This is because it doesn't introduce artificial
low-frequency edges like uniform sampling does. So, if texture filtering is done
right, 800x600 with 4x jitterred FSAA actually does look better for geometry
than 1600x1200 without AA. The 2x mode supported by 3dfx is a surprisingly
good compromise since it doesn't just do horizontal or vertical super-sampling,
but samples on a diagonal.
