After installing the 1.1 patch, GPL waits 40-odd seconds before moving on to
the first menu screen. After reverting to GPL 1.0, the same thing now
happens ANYWAY

I HATE IT... I'm Sooo fed up with it, how can I go back?

GPL is looking for a modem connected to your system... in 1.1 there's a
core.ini option to turn off the behaviour. Mine wouldn't load, period,
turned out unbeknownst to me my modem had crashed and was no longer
responding.....
