Best Joystick for F1GP

by csl.. » Tue, 18 Apr 1995 04:00:00

Dear all,
I am looking for the best joystick for F1GP.

Ideally, I want one that is like, put forward on the joystick lightly
and it will give gentel acceleration. turn wheel a bit, get a little
turn.

I.E I dont want one that is either straight or full lock steering
if you know what I mean.

THanks

Craig

They are *ALL* like that.  Every joystick operates by turning a
potentiometer through a fully analog scale.  The scale is usually
calibrated by the software itself (IndyCar in my case).

If you are using a joystick, you will not have this problem.  I have
found that the big difference between joysticks is their feel, and
also in a few cases their accuracy.  There is a wide range indeed
among joysticks in these categories.   Basically the cheap ones,
well, you get what you pay for.  I know folks whoare successfully
using the Gravis Pro Analog, I have a Wingman Extreme, various
models of the Thrustmaster Flight Control systems, and the CH Pro
series controls.

IndyCar and F1GP seem to be readily controllable with joysticks.
I don't know of too many folks who race NASCAR with a 'stick and
think it's sufficient.

On the PC they are, but maybe "cslapp" has an Amiga, where they are
usually digital. If so, try asking the amigaf1gp mailing list; to

Yea, I would prefer a 'wheel' type joystick that will 'clamp' onto the desk
so as it wont slip around.

Also, I am not sure, but I understand you get better control over the keyboard
i.e when using the keyboard, the car tends to follow a 'line' all the time
by this I mean, you take a corner as slow as you want, and yet still you cannot
keep it hugging the curb all the way around. I am hope the joystick will allow
'power slides' around corners :)

if this is the case, please let me know

Thanks

Craig

I know what you mean. You're saying that you want an ANALOG joystick, not a DIGITAL one.
An analog joystick is a joystick that can measure how far you extend the
stick in any direction. A digital counterpart only measures whether
you push in a direction or not, and you're almost as well off with a keyboard.
Virtually all sticks for PC use (all of them) are analog. Just go out and
get a good one then. I personally recommend the CH-Flightstick. It really rules,
without having way too many buttons.

All together now: "You can never have too many buttons!"

Seriously, I too like the CH sticks; they seem precise and smooth. The
Gravis Analog Pro is also a nice stick, and the Phoenix is okay (but
there really are far, far too many buttons! 24!)

I also hear good things about the CH Virtual Pilot with F1GP/WC.

On the Amiga, I don't know whether analog sticks work well with the
game or not. Any Amiga-dudes out there know?
