F1GP: Joystick for gear lever?

I'm wondering how to use a joystick for a gear lever.
Using an analogue joystick and making it float (using switches
on the bottom).Up left=1, down right=6, up=3 ,and so forth.
I've tried everything.If it can't be done then its a nice
idea for F1GP2.
