GPL Demo, true taster?

GPL Demo, true taster?

by MaXX » Fri, 28 Apr 2000 04:00:00

There so much enthusiasm for GPL here I'm tempted to buy it,
I know it's now on budget here in the UK but really don't
want to get into it without taking a peek first.

Is the demo a true taster of the game?
Not bothered if graphics restricted, mainly interested in
getting a feel for the physics, will the demo allow me
to do this.

I use an MS Precision Wheel, is this supported OK?

TIA

You will get a good overall satisfaction of the game physics compared to the
full title.  They made them much better in the final product, but the demo
was impressive for it's time ( 2 years old ).

Its not. The game is very user unfriendly and the first five hours
absolutely no fun. So playing the demo prevents from buying the game.

If you will buy it, you are probably ready to invest some time, read the
excellent book "4 wheel drift" which is inside and start to get into the
game.

Then you will got hooked and never look back. Welcome in the
GPL community! :-))

Jochen
(go out and buy it!)

I ran the demo and I hated it.
I didn't even consider buying the game.
Then I read this NG and couldn't fail to see the enthusiasm for GPL so I
bought it.
Haven't looked back since =)

MaXX asked:

Don't buy it, if you do not want to know, how it really feels to drive a
real racing car...   ;-)

Actually there hasn't been anything like GPL after GPL! Do not hesitate
to buy the real thing as soon as possible. And then take the 1.2 patch from
Papy/Sierra; very, very good also for FF (I use MS FF). And then buy Dave
Noonan's converter and convert the most interesting ICR2/CART, N2/N1999
and N3 tracks to the GPL, too.

There hasn't been anything like GPL since GPL! Will there ever be? ;)

All I can say is go down to Game or Electronics Boutique and part with your
9.99.  If you don't like it within 10 days take it back and get a refund.
What have you got to lose?

As it stands at the moment IMHO GPL is the best race sim there is but it
does take time.  You really should give it a try.  The driving physics do
take a lot of practice but it is so rewarding.  Its the only race sim I've
had where you really can steer with the throttle.

The only caution I would have is what hardware do you have.  GPL is pretty
fussy over graphics cards.  If you have a Voodoo or Rendition card then
you'll have no problem.  If you don't you'll need a graphics card such as a
Riva TNT which supports OpenGL.  You'll then have to download a patch to the
sim to enable OpenGL hardware acceleration.  Let us know what hardware you
have and someone here will be able to say how well GPL runs on it.

Cheers

Phil

Don't bother with the demo, get the game at once!

GPL is the best driving game I have ever tried to this date. It's difficult
to describe, but when you go at breakneck speed at the "Ring" you really
"feel" the physics. All others car-sim physics feel "canned" in comparison.

The only thing i can say is i envy you. I really do! I would give anything
to replicate that moment when i opend the GPL box, inserted the CD and blah,
blah... you heard it all in this NG. I just did a few Monza laps and i found
a great setup and had an offline race and Surtes ( yes, Surtes, i guess i
didn't run over his dog after all <g>, people of GPL will know what this
means ), Rodriguez, Parkes and i in my trusty Cooper battled for that 11
position and i did incredible things to them and they did even more
incredible things to me and i think i need a beer right now. But some days
it's just better to stick with beer and leave GPL alone as it can be such a
%^&^$*. I think you get the point!

P.S. Who said that GPL was a state of mind? ;-)

Yes! For sure.
In the demo there is the Glen tracks and before I buy that incredible game I
download and played this demo for a very long time.

Yes!

Just buy it.  There is nothing like the online racing in Vroc.  I used to
get a lot of the racing games that came out and they would hold my interest
for a while, but nothing like this.  I don't play games anymore.  I only run
GPL.  Everything else is just no fun.

I can't beleive all you SURTEES whiners.  You haven't figured out the
VERY SIMPLE METHOD of avoiding the Surtees Shuffle?  I'm sure I can
speak for Eldred and Myself in that drivers like us NEVER HAVE problems
with Surtees running into the back of us...I'M TOO SLOW TO CATCH HIM!

Too slow to catch him? Does that mean that you're so slow you can't even lap
the man ;-) Not even 2 or 3 times per race? Better start using 3rd, 4th and
5th gear ;-)
