Static and popping with NL, but not N3

SB Live! all current drivers, blah, blah, blah.

I have never had a sound problem with the Live! (now the SB PCI 128 was
another story!!!), but I am getting fairly regular and very annoying pops
and static in NL.  All of the same settings in N3 (sound, video, etc.) (and
of course, the machine is the same) produce great sound.  Any ideas what is
different or how to cure the problem?
