GPL Senior (mature?) Racing League?

by Jeffrey Haa » Thu, 16 May 2002 23:57:19

Hi,

After a three year wait, I've finally gotten cable modem service and
have GPL fever all over again.  I tried racing in the good old bad
days but discos, etc had me drop out as the modem didn't hack it.

After spending the last week finding some pick up races (I'm sick
of Monza...), I would like to join a league with some moderately fast
( I can run 1:30's at Monza) but careful drivers. I'm available most
any time and live in the midwest of USA.  It seems most of the larger
fields I see are blocked races on VROC and I'd like to participate.

If there are some leagues with an opening that fit the bill please
email me.  I don't know how else to contact anyone.

Thanks,

Jeff

Try either this forum section:

Or contact MARA (Middle Aged Racers Association)
Someone here will provide the contact to Mara, I can't remember it ;)

What *I'm* looking for is ome place where I can race online just to
test the connection speed once. I've got cable, but it's limited to
128kbps for HTTP, and it looks like 32kbps for anything else...

Thanks all for the suggestions, and thanks for asking, Jeffrey.  I'm hoping to
have some time this summer to try online racing myself, and I definitely qualify
as old and slow! Sounds like a good-ol' 56K modem won't hack it though. Is that
true?  Will I be too frustrated by lack-of-bandwidth? TIA.

Actually 56k is just fine for on-line racing, and I belive
most turn it down to 19200 for a more reliable connection.

My experience was not that positive several years ago when I gave up
in disgust.  Your mileage may vary is what I see.  Depends on the
service provider.  Perhaps now with so many servers running on fat
pipes it makes life easier for the 56k modems. I just know that for
the past 2 weeks I have run a ton of races using the cable modem and
haven't seen a disco yet.  Very little latency as well as minimal
warping in few events. It has been like night and day to me....

It sure can't hurt to try and I would definetly try the turning down
of speed to cut the error rate and retransmissions that can***you
up.
