Still cant get N4 to run after 1.3 patch!! Help!

by Thom j » Sun, 21 Oct 2001 21:20:09

I have some serious problems {or I think I do?} with the new patch!
I have worked with this for over 10-hours now and re-installed from
scratch 5 times! Still once I get past the 1.1 patch and install the 1.3
Nascar 4 wont budge, absolutely nothing! One thing that does work
is it will load the net'server.exe but once I host & I get into the track
my screen of the track is all black & I can not go onto the track via
the "Start" button!!
Plus now that it is locked I have all my setups. etc. in there that are
worthless unless [a] I get the 1.3 patch to run or [b] get back to the
1.1 patch!! I have *Never* had any problems installing or patching
any Sierra or Papyrus products but this really has 'N4' all screwed
up! Please help! Anyone! Tia.. Thom_j.
PC Specs: CPU Intel P3 1gig,Video GF2GTS-Pro 64megs of ram,

Posted already by Eric Busch:

There appears to be a bug in the Wise installer which on some systems
can cause long file names to be truncated to 8.3 format during the patch
process.  The Sierra.com multiplayer login does a CRC check on the
executables and DLLs, and if they are not named properly they will not
be found and hence fail the check resulting in the "out of date" error.

Rename the following files:
NASCAR~1.exe > "NASCAR Racing 4.exe"
Sierra~1.dll > "SierraUpN4Res.dll"
rendse~1.dll > "Rendserver.dll"

And perhaps:
Paintkit\n4paint~1.rsc > Paintkit\n4paintkit.rsc

Still cant get N4 to run after 1.3 patch!! Help!

by REDLINE42 » Mon, 22 Oct 2001 00:29:02

Holy Moly Thom, I don't know where to start on this.

I downloaded the patch from the ftp2.sierra.com site with an FTP client.
Even though it did time out during the download and I had to go back in the
morning to finish, (they have resume on in the site, :-) I like ftp
clients).
Ya can't get on this morning, "Too Many Anonymous User's Logged On" suggest
a re-download of the patch?

Was hesitant about patching after reading about some of these posts. But
everything went sweet with only the warning about "Third Party Add Ons".
Even though I do have a graphic add-on for the gauges, no problems here.
Sheeeit ! I haven't even read the readme yet, Just tested it out in one race
and didn't see any great frame rate increase. :((

You didn't mention what OS you were running, Win98??? also what
motherboard/chipset do you have?
What manufacture of CD-ROM do you have?
I don kno, all I can say is sounds like a video driver problem to me, Did
you re-run the "Configure 3D Graphics" again?

Virus? Trojan? I see in header/message info you are using OE 5.5, there is a
new security patch that came out for all version of Internet Explorer on
Oct. 10th. suggest upgrading to IE 6.0 & OE 6.0 and putting everything on
"High Restrictions".
8 new virus's have come out since October 1st.

Oh well that's about it for me Thom, Cheer up thou, Did you see the 500GP
from Phillips Island? Great race wasn't it.
The F1 Suzuka race was pretty good, or did all the F1 bashers sleep through
it?.........he he LOL

Hey I like your monitor, I'm bummed, my 19" Sony is acting up and may need
to go in for warranty. :(((((
I had to go out and buy some High Powered read'in glasses to see this little
but sweet Dell Trinitron 15" monitor in 1024x768.

Last tip? 10 hours? I think it is time to "A:\format c:" and reinstall
everything? naaa just kidding, but 10hrs???

Good Luck, I gotta get off to D.I.S.

Cliff Roma

Still cant get N4 to run after 1.3 patch!! Help!

by Cliff Roma » Mon, 22 Oct 2001 01:11:56

Thom, seems that Sony is using a newer version of SecuRom and this is
causing some problems.  Here are the messages that Eric has posted and the
one about updating your RAID drivers may help you... it also explains why
this is happening to some people

These are from Eric

"How many of you with this problem have HTP370 Raid controllers, either
on-board or as a PCI add-on?  There seems that certain HTP370 driver/bios
combinations are having problems with the SecuROM copy protection.  If you
haven't already, visit you motherboard manufacturer as well as
www.highpoint-tech.com to obtain the latest non-beta release versions and
see if it helps the problem."

"Each time an executable is "SecuROM'ed" it uses the latest protection Sony
has available on their site.  Basically we build the executable just as we
would for any project, send it to Sony using a utility they provide, the
SecuROM protection is applied, and then the now "SecuROM'ed" EXE is sent
back to us."

"That would be my conclusion as there is nothing in our code that does the
copy protection, and as expected the n4server.exe which doesn't use SecuROM
seems to work fine on these systems.

There's really little if any consumer information available on the SecuROM
site: www.securom.com  I'll see if our contacts there have any insight or
suggestions."

"Ok, good news.  Both HighPoint and the Sony SecuROM people are aware of the
problem and are working on a solution.  At this point it's unclear if it
will be a HighPoint driver fix or a SecuROM fix, but I'll keep you posted as
to what they are able to find out.

Until then, you might want to try the older 1.0.3 drivers as these have
proven successful for some users.  HighPoint recommends that you not connect
any CDROM drives to the RAID controller, and instead use the motherboard's
standard ATA controller.  Additionally if you're currently not using the
RAID functionality for your hard drives, you might to temporarily switch
them over to the standard ATA controller as well."

Certain motherboards have that RAID controller on board.

Obviously I do not know if yours does, but it was just something that seems

by Thom j » Mon, 22 Oct 2001 13:55:01

Thanx a lot for the help & info Cliff!

RAID thing and the HTP370 Raid controllers stuff. phew! I have
seen in somewhere but I just can not re-locate it again!! & if I do
how do you  change this so called drivers tp the 1.03 ones?
What a mess just for an "F"in' patch! Sorry Eric but somebody
blew it big time at Papy this time!! Damm!! Now, What do I do
once I find this RAID driver junk? Tia.. Thom_j.

| Certain motherboards have that RAID controller on board.
|

Still cant get N4 to run after 1.3 patch!! Help!

by Tim Mise » Thu, 25 Oct 2001 07:06:33

Do you have Raid on that mobo?  I saw a post above that indicated there were
some issues with the patch and highpoint controllers which is the controller
Abit uses.  The fix is to move your hard drives and CDroms onto the non
Highpoint controller.  Hope you don't have a Raid-0 going on!
